Ragweed the mouse is four months old and anxious to see the world. So he says goodbye to his family and friends in the Woodlands and, following the advice of a friendly vole, makes his way to the big city: Amperville. In Amperville, Ragweed sees things he's never seen before - like cats! In particular, he comes face-to-face with Silversides, founder and president of F.E.A.R. (Felines Enraged About Rodents). Silversides wants to make sure mice know their place in the world. With new friends Clutch, a skateboarding mouse with green hair, and Blinker, a pet mouse longing for freedom, Ragweed takes a stand against F.E.A.R.

A prequel to Avi's award-winning Poppy and Poppy and Rye, Ragweed will delight listeners with its exciting adventure and contemporary sensibilities. John McDonough gives hilarious voice to the many wonderful characters in this charming book.

" This book reads aloud easily. Anna loved it and would probably give it more starts. There's suspense, a big idea (stand up for yourself, work together, explore the world). The writing is full of figurative language and vocabulary worth discussing. Simple plot. Worth checking out from the library. It's the beginning of the Poppy series. Five more to go! "

" AVI is an amazing storyteller. We have used his writing as an example of descriptive details meaning "showing" not "telling". The POPPY series is a great read aloud. "

" I liked Poppy so much more maybe I'm a bit biased! It give the reader the background information on Ragweed but as a read-aloud I don't think the battle scene between Poppy and Mr. Ocax can be topped! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Donna Hunt | 4/28/2013

" Great prequel to "Poppy" the story of Ragweed, Poppy's late boyfriend and how he went from life in a calm meadow, to life on the city streets. And there are two very unhappy cats there waiting to destroy him. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Karen A. | 4/22/2013

" We listened to this in the car. Both kids enjoyed the story. Graham even said that he wanted to be just like Ragweed ~ a little mouse with a little mouse city. With cool mouse friends. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Pam Scholz | 4/6/2013

" The first of the Dimwood Forest series and my least favorite. Having a hard time reading it to my boys and keeping them interested. The other in this story kept us begging for more and staying up too late. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Becca | 3/20/2013

" Vaughn ended up reading this to Emily instead of me. I'll have to ask him what he thought of it. The parts I read and overheard were not as great as Poppy, but still it was a good book. "
