Publisher Description

The biblical psalms offer several different viewpoints on war and warfare, from pride in victory with the Lord's help, to complaint that the speaker is the only one who seems to want peace, to demands on the Lord to wake up and take revenge on enemies who prowl the streets howling like dogs and preying on the innocent.

Psalms for Warriors presents 15 psalms of King David in his role as fighter. As part of the Psalms Project, this program samples several second languages following the English; for example, Psalm 3 in English (New Revised Standard Version) is followed by Psalm 3 in Greek; Psalm 10 in English is followed by Psalm 10 in Spanish.

Newly composed music in the folk styles of North and South America accompanies the speakers and feature the percussive sounds of capoeira, the martial art and dance derived from the culture of African slaves in Brazil.

This program also features the Soldier's Psalm (91, Septuagint 90), known in certain circles of the American armed forces since World War I as a protector of those who recite it every day. Currently, many soldiers in Iraq are wearing head scarves bearing the words of this psalm. Lest we be superstitious, however, this psalm is also famous as the one the devil quotes in the Gospel of Luke (4:1-13) to tempt Jesus to give up his mission. The words contain the promise of the messiah.
