Publisher Description

In Promise, Texas, people know what it is to depend on a friend, and how to be that friend. They know that family, home, and community are the things that really count. They know that love gives meaning to every single day of their lives.

Some of the people in Promise are from old ranching families, like the Westons and the Pattersons, who first came to hill country more than a century ago. And there are newcomers like Annie Applegate, who's looking for peace and finds a great deal more. She agrees to marry a widowed veterinarian for the sake of his children...and discovers that marriage can lead to love.

In Promise, everyone's life is a story! The people here, like people everywhere, experience tragedies as well as triumphs, sorrow as well as joy. This town, like towns everywhere, has its share of secrets. But, whether times are good or bad, you're never alone in a place like Promise. And that makes all the difference.

"Due to popular demand, veteran author Debbie Macomber returns once more to Promise, the fictional town in the Texas hill country, site of Macomber's celebrated Heart of Texas series. Characters who have become like readers' old friends appear again, along with new faces including Annie Applegate, Gordon Pawling, and Nessa Boyd, who find romance when they least expect it. Love, intrigue, and tragedy are well known to the citizens of small-town Texas, where the past, present, and future collide as they are wont do in all our lives. Perhaps it is here that the secret of Macomber's distinction lies; she elucidates so clearly the extraordinary nature of the most ordinary lives. Readers will hope that Promise, Texas, continues to experience a population explosion, thanks to Macomber's fluent crafting and her understanding of the human heart. --Alison Trinkle"

" #7 in the Heart of Texas series which brings a different couple (or two) together in each book. In Macomber's trademark sweet style, Annie Applegate comes to Promise at the urging of her childhood friend Dr. Jane (#4 Dr. Texas) after a car accident that leaves her scarred and dumped by her husband. Cue the widowered vet with two daughters...and you can guess where this is going. It's heartening that her book store is doing so well! Two other romantic threads are woven in: Sheriff Adam can't seem to get things right with Jenny, the school marm and Birdy's (who previously tied the knot with the now retired Sheriff) cousin hits it off with the retired judge from Birdy's decision-making cruise. It is the characters and the tone that give Macomber her appeal, not the plots. "
