" A definite antidote to the Twilight world of 90210 with fangs (and significantly predating it) this is one of those books (like Peter Straub's "Ghost Story") that should be tactfully thrust into the face of any of those whiners who dare to say something as vapid as "But it's about Vampires!" Yeah yeah we know, they're everywhere, they'll be on the census soon. I like Vampires but I'm starting to wonder if I can face many more. But wait! Few of them are as interesting and rounded as they are here. There's a superbly rendered historical setting here, an atmosphere so vivid you can damn near sniff the Mississippi, and a well-written fully-formed story with enough emotion in it to make it, well... human. It's an effortless read too, no mean feat for something so intelligent. "

" I have been a huge fan of George RR Martin from the moment I picked up A Game of Thrones in college, and have been waiting to read Fevre Dream from the moment I heard of this highly acclaimed first novel; it did not disappoint. I found myself throughly engrossed and on the edge of my seat during the entire dark journey down the Mississippi and is one of the few vampire tales that thoroughly differentiates itself in my view. Recommended if you enjoy vampires, steamboats, the Mississippi River, horror through suspense rather than solely through gratuitous violence, or any combination thereof. "

" This book got me started on vampires and was (as I was growing up) the author I held in high esteem for character development. Before Ann Rice, before Bram Stoker ... okay, not before Bram, this is a good yarn. Happy Halloween! "

" The dialogue is great, and I really liked the setting. "

" A totally unique take on Vampire mythology infused with deep south locales, 19th century gothic horror and interesting, believable characters, this book moves at a clip and draws you in like the best of its genre. Clearly, this is George R.R. Martin before the height of his powers and in new and experimental territory, but as a supplement to the lack of new Ice and Fire, Fevre Dream is a great way to spend a few thrilling hours. Read it even if you aren't a Vampire fan, or if you haven't yet read any GRRM. "

" Essentially, if a George R. R. Martin book about vampires on steamboats set in the antebellum South sounds like something you think you would enjoy, then chances are you actually will. Not earthshattering, but a good idea well-executed, and I do like the nonstandard protagonist. "

" I felt at times there was too much description where it wasn't necessary but the story was good. The characters were perfectly flawed and deep and the setting was awesome. "

" Not gonna write a long review. I'll just say that I really enjoyed this book. Characters can die, and things don't just come easily for the main characters. "

" Loved the take on vampires and thought the whole story was very unique. A lot of research has obviously gone into it, and it felt real. Haunting, although I thought it lacked some action. "

" Brilliant stuff. Not quite in the five start category, but close. I wish people would write more vampire novels like this instead of the, well, poop that's dominating. "

" Not great, but not terrible. Bits of it were good, but I had trouble really getting into it, and it felt long. Gotta say, pretty sure the guy that wrote that Abraham Lincoln vampire slayer book must have read this one... parts of it were pretty similar. "

" In the antebellum South an idealistic young vampire travels the Mississippi in a river boat seeking out vampires to convert to his blood substitute, until in New Orleans he encounters a far more powerful vampire and the plan kind of goes to hell. "
