When convicted murderer and paranoid schizophrenic Michael Hrubek escapes from the New England Hospital for the Criminally Insane, there is one person he especially wants to see: Lis Atcheson, forty-year-old high school English teacher, cultivator of roses—and the chief witness at his trial. As Michael pursues Lis, several others hunt Michael: Trenton Heck, a professional tracker in need of the reward money; Richard Kohler, Michael’s psychiatrist with secrets of his own to hide; Dr. Ronald Adler, head of the hospital, whose plush job is threatened by Michael’s escape; and Owen Atcheson, Lis’s husband, who is determined to reach Michael and kill him—before Michael reaches Lis.

" This book was a bit of a surprise. I expected it to be well written, as usual with Deaver, but I was expecting a detective sort of story. This was more of a suspense crime-in-action sort of thing. Every time I thought I had things figured out the plot twisted slightly and the end result was both surprising and satisfying! "

" This was a tremendous story! Deaver's' story begins when Michael Hrubek escapes from a mental institution, and follows the separate tales of Hrubeck, the police, the hospital staff, and Hrubeck's intended target as the chase is on. Not only were all storylines interesting, but the ending was great too! Looking forward to one day hearing that this book will be made into a movie! "

" Although I didn't enjoy this as much as Devils Teardrop it was still a very good thriller with good characters and a twisty storyline, the only downside was that it was a bit slower in parts but it still pushed you to finish it so I can forgive Deaver for the odd breather "
