" Fascinating read with such a vast landscape, amazing array of people and an astounding complexity of royal intrigue and war it is mind boggling. Plan on taking time to read this one in small sections. There are pieces about war strategy and battles that may be slow to some readers but overall Massie sprinkles in insight into personalities and the realities of Peter's time that leave the reader more knowledgeable and more contemplative about history and the people that drive it. "

" I read a lot of history, and this is the single best book I've ever read. Epic in a way that has to be read to be believed. "

" When I wrote my novel The Tsar's Dwarf I used this book as my primary source. Massie's biography is written like a novel. It's incredible entertaining and a must for any one who is fascinated with Peter the Great and 17th, 18th century Russia. "

" This was a great read. It was the quickest 1000 page read I have ever done. The accomplishments of Peter are so many that there was never really a lull in this book. Massie has impressed me in all of three of his books that I have read. Now all I need is a book on Ivan the Terrible and I will have completed my interests in Russian Tsars. "

" I'm a nerd, but I would have studied history if there was security in it. No longer carries the weight it did during the Cold War, but still a great history lesson. "

" I wonder if Russia would be considered as a part of Europe today if Peter had not be tsar a long time ago. It seems like he single-handedly yanked Russia out of its feudal state and forced Europe to recognize and accept Russia as part of Europe. Fascining! "

" Massie is an excellent author. His style is almost novelesque, and definitely brings all the people in this biography alive. The 800+(?) pages just melted away. Very good read. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Brent | 2/5/2013

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Lans Hobart | 12/9/2012

" Very LOOONG book that went out of Peters immediate circles for a lot of back story. I loved the read! The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that there was a little too much battle strategy that was detailed. Those particular parts drug out just a little. "

" I had a difficult time rating this one. Half of the book was very interesting, and I learned a lot. But I have to say that about 400 pages was military campaigns that bored me to death. If it weren't for the time spent on military campaigns, I would have rated it a 4 star book. "
