Pony Carteret - the lovely headstrong youngest member of the Carteret family - has always been a strong swimmer. So when she is discovered drowned at the family's summer home on Lake Aral, Vermont, her red hair tangled in an anchor chain and her baby abandoned on shore, her family is stunned with disbelief.

As the police conduct their investigation, Jasper Carteret, the patriarch, calls an urgent family meeting. Had any of her siblings known that Pony would be at the house that day? Was she having personal problems, was she depressed? Had she ever revealed the true identity of her baby's father? Neither sister - Tinker, the family caretaker, nor Mira, the moody, thoughtful one - has any information, and ultimately the police rule the drowning an accident.

But William Carteret, Pony's older brother, can't accept the explanation that his favorite sister's death was an accident. Determined to uncover the truth, he eventually learns the disturbing fact that a stranger had been present at the house the evening Pony died. Who was this man, what was he doing at the house, and why hasn't he stepped forward?

As William digs deeper, his investigations quickly lead him to a new and more daunting series of questions, not only about the mysteries in Pony's life but also about the shadowy details of his deceased mother's past and even his own. Before long, he has opened a Pandora's box of family secrets, including one dangerous fact his mother has kept hidden for a generation. Download and start listening now!

" I really enjoyed reading this book. It was compelling, and the characters are very real. There is, however, no "mystery" to it. Every surprise I saw coming a mile away. Since I read a lot of mysteries, I expect to have to figure things out. Then I thought I'm just being hard on the author because if she didn't intend for it to be a mystery, then it shouldn't be judged as such. Some things remain unbelievable however. For example, Olivia's sister Minerva knows nothing of the first baby Patrick. Why? Olivia would have to have kept the baby a secret knowing that one day she would run off with her second baby and leave her first baby behind. She would not have known that at the time of giving birth to her first child. It doesn't fit in. It's not as if her relationship with Larry was a secret to Minerva. I did enjoy reading the book in the sense that I couldn't wait to find time to read it, but I wish it had been more complex or mysterious. I knew from the moment that Keith inserts himself into their lives that he was the one at the house with Pony. I even knew due to the emails about incest that Keith is probably William's half-brother (at least) and he's Andrew's father. I kept waiting to be shocked, but it just kept turning out to be what I thought it would be. "

" this is a super-low three. will someone tell me why i do it?? i have thousands of unread books here. thousands. and i choose to read a book from an author whose first book was eh. and why do i own it in hardcover?? why am i so impetuous?? why not choose a book from someone whose pedigree is better?? and now i have to go read library science book, so i cant even read anything better for at least 2 days. for a more pertinent review - this was mostly predictable and ludicrous, but i never wanted to throw it.
