Publisher Description

A picturesque Yorkshire village is dressed in its finest for the upcoming Noel. But one of its residents will not be celebrating this holiday. Chief Inspector Alan Banks knows that secrecy can sometimes prove fatal—and secrets were the driving force behind Caroline Hartley's life...and death. She was a beautiful enigma, brutally stabbed in her own home three days prior to Christmas. Leaving her past behind for a forbidden love affair, she mystified more than a few. And now she is dead, clothed only in her unshared mysteries and her blood. In this season of giving and forgiving, Banks is eager to absolve the innocent of their sins. But that must wait until the many facets of a perplexing puzzle are exposed and the dark circle of his investigation finally closes...and when a killer makes the next move.

"Another crime solved by Chief Inspector Alan Banks in the Yorkshire countryside.. a good, fun read. Fifth in the series, looking forward to number six. Now time for a pint and kidney pie sitting by the fire at the local pub (where all the real sleuthing is done!) "

" Another wonderful story with Inspector Banks. Robinson's writing style is a joy to read and the subject matter certainly changes to keep your interest up. "

" Plotting and writing gets better with each book - only thing that let this down for me was the outdated presentation of the lesbian couple and views about them. "

" If you like this author, it's more good Banks. As usual he weaves a great story, though I figured out 'whodunnit' early (hence only 3 stars). Still, it was a good ride and I can't wait to read the next. He's starting to develop Susan Gay, who so far isn't a great thinker! and hence can be irritating, but we'll see where he goes with her. " Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks books are always good. This is not one of his best though. I didn't feel drawn to the characters in this book as I have in others. "

" Even though Past Reason Hated has many of the same atmospheric qualities as the other Peter Robinson mysteries, this one seems to lack energy. Maybe the fact that it was set in a snowy Yorkshire winter has something to do with that. Even so, it's hard to beat reading a wintry murder mystery in the middle of a Kansas winter when it's best to stay warm and cozy inside. "
