"I grabbed this books off of our shelves in the library's children's dept. on my way to my break, not expecting to finish the book, just looking for something simple to read while I ate. But this, the last book that Ibbotson wrote before she passed away after a long and prolific writing career, turned out to be a delightful and entertaining novel. This book which takes place in modern day London would be a fun introduction for American kids to a world that is at once familiar, yet charmingly different (complete with some very quirky adult characters) from the one in which they live. Highly recommend as a great book to read aloud with kids (aged 6 and up), especially in order to explain the occasional unfamiliar British terms."

Quotes

  • “Readers who have grown to love Ibbotson’s bighearted heroes and larger-than-life adventure stories will relish this final novel.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Ibbotson's final book is a story with the heart of Lassie and the satirical bite of Roald Dahl...Themes of loyalty, greed, devotion, and home are woven through a text that is as funny as it is satisfying.”

    — Booklist
  • “Ibbotson's last novel is a mix of adventure, caricature and child-and-dog love, in which loyal friends, skuduggerous louts and obtuse adults all have a part. The comforting feeling that everything will turn out right is nicely mixed with the spice of humor.”

    — Toronto Star
  • “A rousing, slightly surreal tale of rescue and redemption, this effort will appeal to animal lovers everywhere.”

    — Kirkus Reviews

" I love Eve Ibbotson's writing, and though I enjoyed this book, it wasn't my favorite of hers. If you want a happily-ever-after dog story, though, instead of a dog story where the dog dies, you should read this one! "

" This was okay - very sweet and family-friendly. I'm just not much of an animal story person, especially when it comes to talking dogs. Also, the narrator of the audiobook sounded like a young Tim Curry completely bored out of his mind. "
