Publisher Description

"Olive Barstow was dead. She'd been hit by a car on Monroe Street while riding her bicycle weeks ago. That was about all Martha knew."

Martha Boyle and Olive Barstow could have been friends. But they weren't -- and now all that is left are eerie connections between two girls who were in the same grade at school and who both kept the same secret without knowing it.

Now Martha can't stop thinking about Olive. A family summer on Cape Cod should help banish those thoughts; instead, they seep in everywhere.

And this year Martha's routine at her beloved grandmother's beachside house is complicated by the Manning boys. Jimmy, Tate, Todd, Luke, and Leo. But especially Jimmy. What if, what if, what if, what if?

The world can change in a minute.

"This book's about a girl named Martha. Her and her family are packing for their yearly family vacation during the summerwith their grandmother near an ocean. While they're still packing, a woman comes by the door and gives Martha a paper. The paper is a page from Olive's diary. Olive was a quiet girl who died a few months ago, she was hit by a car. The diary entry told about how Olive wanted to be friends with Martha. Martha felt bad, eventhough Martha never really knew Olive. And this haunted Martha and changed her summer upside down. Her summer consisted of her first kiss, two boys, making sure her grandmother wasn't dying, and "Olives' ocean"."

" I liked this book, but it was a little dark... and odd how the main character found herself connected to a dead girl. Still, it was a touching read. "

" This was another cute little book that I read quickly. I seem to not have much spare time right now and this book fit the bill. I love Kevin Henkes' picture books and this book was fun to read. I loved the relationship between the girl and her grandmother. "

" I have finally finished this book! I think it was a great book, but in the begining it was not very good to me but after that one sentence the book was awsome. I think this book was really good because the main character Martha has began to come close to here surroundings and then she learns to love life and have fun with who she loves. I hope you get a chance to read it, because if you don't you'll miss out on a lot! "

" One of my favorite young adult books. I can't remember how many times I read this from 5th to 8th grade. The emotions are written so well and flow easily for a tween to understand. It was one of my first "serious" books I really had ever read. "

" Martha and Olive were not friends. Olive was killed. Soon after Olive's Mother gave Martha a page from Olive's journal. The page had a profound effect on Martha. It was an eerie feeling during a family vacation at the ocean. Martha began to realize how quickly life can change. "

" Nice little book. Quick read. Nice, optimistic, open ending. You know I'm not a fan of the "all the pieces fall into place" happy ending, so I was relieved that Henkes refrained. Would love to read a book about Olive, who is a minor character in this book. Maybe I'll write my own. "
