Alex Lake's day job is all about helping people, especially children. She cares about them passionately and does everything in her power to rescue them from those who mean them harm.

When the case of three-year-old Ottilie Wade comes to her attention, Alex finds herself completely unable to detach from the child the way she should. She feels an overpowering need to make a real difference in little Ottilie's life, but no one is prepared to believe that Ottilie is in danger.

In the end, Alex makes a decision that has consequences for her, her family and Ottilie - consequences that no one, least of all Alex, could have foreseen.

" very difficult subject but a great read none the less "

" While I am sympathtic with the main character there just seems to be too much going on. Reading about child abuse is not my favorite and had I known I would not have started this book. It was difficult to put down once I started but equally difficult to continue. "

" There's so much that I want to say that I have to come back later to add a better review. I am just so in love with this book and just how honest it was. "

" This was the first book of Susan Lewis that I have read, and I thought it was great, a real page turner, I found I didnt want to put the book down. Probably a sensitive subject for a lot of people, but I thought it was handled very tactfully, much more so than many murder/crime books out there that deal with child abuse. And a twist ending too - what else can you want! "

" This is really an excellent, thought provoking book. I just kept turning the pages even though it wasn't an easy subject to read or write about. This child really pulled at my heart strings. I don't know how anyone could put their child through the horror she experienced!! "
