Publisher Description

Welcome to the secret wing of County Hospital—where vampires get transfusions, werewolves have silver allergies, and one nurse is in way over her head. Working the nightshift can be a real nightmare.

Nursing school prepared Edie Spence for a lot of things. Burn victims? No problem. Severed limbs? Piece of cake. Vampires? No way in hell. But as the newest nurse on Y4, the secret ward hidden in the bowels of County Hospital, Edie has her hands full with every paranormal patient you can imagine—from vamps and were-things to zombies and beyond.

Edie’s just trying to learn the ropes so she can get through her latest shift unscathed. But when a vampire servant turns to dust under her watch, all hell breaks loose. Now she’s haunted by the man’s dying words—Save Anna—and before she knows it she’s on a mission to rescue some poor girl from the undead—which involves crashing a vampire den, falling for a zombie, and fighting for her soul. Grey’s Anatomy was never like this.

"It was kind of refreshing to read an UF book that did not have kick-butt heroine (though she did kick butt a little, it was not her sole life's purpose). I was squicked by the fact that she's dating a zombie whose parts are healing/falling off and especially when they had sex; I think I threw up in my mouth a little. I'm more used to unemotional/terrifying zombies that want to eat you than ones that want to share their experiences and sleep with you. And yes, he does have to eat the long pig. Ugh. But that was the only detracting point of the book and it was a brief part of the book though Ti, the zombie, is in most of the book and probably the sequel (and he does seem like a nice guy. But. Ugh.)."

Quotes

  • “Dark and clever full-moon insanity that will get into your blood, crawl under your skin, and haunt your dreams.”

    — Sherrilyn Kenyon, #1 New York Times bestselling author
  • “Alexander’s first novel launches a new series that should appeal to fans of medical thrillers as well as urban fantasy.

    — Library Journal
  • “The best debut I’ve read all year. Nightshifted is simply amazing!”

    — Kat Richardson, bestselling author of the Greywalker series
  • “Medical drama and vampire cold wars intersect in this solid urban fantasy debut…Alexander’s zombies are particularly well designed, and the hospital environment adds an intriguing additional dimension…Edie’s life is full of hard knocks, and though it’s hard to like a heroine who constantly pushes people away, her gradual development into a person who can allow others to care for her is satisfying.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Nurse Edie Spence is gutsy, compassionate, and determined—traits that quickly manage to get her into serious trouble! A host of intriguing characters enliven this story that is edgy, funny, and exciting. A very impressive debut!”

    — RT Book Reviews
  • “Nightshifted’s main character, nurse Edie Spence, has a distinctive, appealing, and no-nonsense style that you won’t quickly forget. Add to that a paranormal population that needs medical care for some very odd reasons and you have a winner of a debut novel.”

    — Kate Elliott, author of the Cold Magic series
  • “Fresh, exciting, dark, and sexy, Nightshifted is excellent urban fantasy that grabs you by the throat and pulls you along for a wild ride. Cassie Alexander is an author to watch!”

    — Diana Rowland, author of Mark of the Demon

" The four stars are mostly for really interesting world building. This felt like something I hadn't read before, and a heroine that didn't magically get all powerful is something I can get behind. I'll pick up the next one to see what's done with the world - hope it'll live up to the promise. "
