For three days battle has raged in the snow around the great city of Tar Valon. In the city, a foretelling of the future is uttered. On the slopes of Dragonmount, the immense mountain that looms over the city, a child is born, an infant prophesied to change the world. That child must be found before he can be killed by the forces of the Shadow. And Moiraine Damodred, a young Accepted soon to be raised to Aes Sedai, and Lan Mandragoran, a young soldier fighting in the battle, are set on paths that will bind their lives together. But those paths are filled with complications and dangers, for Moiraine is of the Royal House of Cairhien, whose King has just died, and Lan is considered the uncrowned king of a nation long dead, and the plots of those seeking power threaten their lives. The novella New Spring told a part of the story, in compressed form...the novel New Spring tells the whole story. Download and start listening now!

" Re-reading the series from the 'beginning'. Forgot a lot of what this refers to, might be better of reading in the order it was written. "

" This is a prequel to the Wheel of Time series. I want to re-read the series because I only got to book 10 and the series goes on and on and on. (It does stop only because the author died and another author finished the final book.) I liked the book but if I hadn't read the other books it would have been confusing. However, I like the characters of Lan, Moraine and Suian. It was great to see them at the beginning of their relationships and what started them on their quest. The series is well worth the time. "

" Wonderful. Excellent. It just solidifies what I already felt for Moraine, Siuane and Lan. "

" Thought I'd read this first and if I didn't get on with it, I'd know not to bother with the whole Wheel of Time series. Well, it was enjoyable and gave me enough of a taster, that I will be looking to get the 14 part saga. I hope Brandon Sanderson is persuaded to go back and make this one into the trilogy that was originally intended as I'd like to know what happens to the characters here. "

" How great to be able to read another book of the Wheel of Time, when I thought I had already read them all. I am a great fan. "

" I will be rereading this series in a couple of years when the final books are released. I'll write a proper review at that time. "

" As the title suggests, this book relates a story that takes place before the first book of the Wheelof Time. About 18 years before they set off to find the farmboy & potential savior of their world, Rand al'THor, the duo of Moiraine and Lan had to meet, learn to tolerate each other, and find a common purpose. These are two of the more interesting characters in the series, Moiraine having been a calculating woman of no small power, and Lan being basically a fighting machine who was once the heir apparent to a kingdom that has recently ben wiped off of the map. This short novel chronicles their meeting, and it does so in decent, if not stellar fashion. The tale itself is nothing wonderous - the interesting thing about the book is reading the back stories on several characters that you know and love or hate from the series. It's not bad and worth reading at some point in the series, but I doubt it will blow anyone away. "

" It was alright. I really liked the setting of the story. If you're into fantasy, this book is for you. Overall it was a pretty good book, but it took me forever to read. "

" Good one, I've read it a couple of times and I've really enjoyed it. I just wish there were more POVs of Lan and Moiraine in the actual series. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Camirose | 11/22/2013

" This is a little anti-climactic reading once you've read the other books first. I would suggest starting with this one since it is a prequel so that way it is more exciting like the other books. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Luci | 8/23/2013

" I really enjoyed this prequel. Much shorter than other books in the series and focusing on a few characters, this book outlines the beginning of the WoT saga. I really enjoyed seeing a new light shed on good characters and seeing the backstories of Lan and Moiraine. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Holly | 8/2/2012

" This is a prequel to Robert Jordan's epic "Wheel of Time" series and I would highly recommend reading that before delving into this. It was very satisfying to get some of the back-story about the incredibly detailed world that Jordan created and it is a good read for "Wheel of Time" fans. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Melissa | 3/30/2012

" Great pre-quel to the whole Wheel of Time series...nice insight to some of the older characters and the start of the hunt for the Dragon Reborn. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Wayne Michael | 12/30/2011

" This book was very good. However some of the details the author goes into seems to have no relevance to the story itself. This is a long series so perhaps the chapter spent on purchasing dresses and setting up bank accounts will come into play in a later book. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Amy | 4/29/2011

" I enjoy the Wheel of Time series. This is a nice introduction to Moraine and Lan and some insight into how Moraine and Siuan's relationship started.
I think it would be enjoyable as a stand-alone novel for someone who has not read the series. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Karla | 4/1/2011

" Not the best WOT book, but I still enjoyed it. It tells the history of Moraine and Lan, which most readers will enjoy. This is mainly extra information that Jordan could not fit into book one. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 A.J. | 2/6/2011

" It's a decent book, but don't use it as a starting place for the Wheel of Time. It doesn't have the ...wow factor... that the other books in the series have. Worth reading if you're a fan of the series and you want more back-story on some characters. "
