Bill Maher first came to national attention as the host of the hit Comedy Central and ABC-TV program Politically Incorrect, where he offered a combustible mixture of irreverence and acerbic humor that helped him to garner a loyal following, as well as a reputation for being a hilarious provocateur.

Now, his popular new HBO television show, Real Time with Bill Maher, has put him more front and center than ever. In particular, one of the show's segments entitled New Rules has struck a chord with viewers. It's within his rules that Maher takes serious aim, bringing all his incisiveness, wit, and his signature exasperation to bear on topics ranging from cell phones (I don't need my cell phone to take pictures or access the Internet. I just need to make a phone call. From everywhere! Not just the places it likes!) to fast food (New Rule: No more McDonald's in hospitals. I'm not kidding!) to the conservative agenda (Stop claiming it's an agenda. It's not an agenda. It's a random collection of laws that your corporate donors paid you to pass.), Maher brings these brilliantly conceived riffs to audio for the first time, along with some singularly Maher-ian editorials, editorials nothing like the standard fare found on the pages of the local newspaper!

" This was awful! I love a good comedian's story, this is NOT one of them. I thought I was a fan of Bill Maher, not anymore. I couldn't get through it...not even after trying in several places. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Nikki | 2/18/2014

" New Rules works as a segment on Maher's television show but not lumped into a book or audio format with nothing else. Constant "new rule" after "new rule" became tiresome and the tone of the book was rather bitter overall. So instead of being funny, as it is on TV, it was a mad rant from an angry guy who constantly uttered "new rule". Plus, these "new rules" are largely dated and greatly impacted my enjoyment. Overall, if you're looking to have a good mood ruined this may work! I do not recommend it while online shopping, it makes finding a deal that much more unbearable. "

" I'm a huge Maher fan and find him one of the most truthful and more importantly logical pundit in the media. Unforutnatly his humor can turn many away which is a shame. People need to be less offended when searhing for truth. In any case this book is nothing more than a compilation of New Rules from his show. Nothing new in the book at all. Pretty lame. "

" The beginning had me laughing out loud, but as the book continued, it just didn't hold me like I hoped it would. That being said, while I don't agree with everything Bill says, I think he has a common sense about his views. "

" I listened to the audiobook on a long drive, smiling the whole time with a few outloud laughs and several shakings of the head. Oh, Bill, he goes slightly too far just enough times that I don't agree with him 100% of the time and I love him for it! I especially love his musings on females...particularly he observations of eyebrow and bikini waxing. Hilarious. "

" This copy was 99 cents at Goodwill and I'm glad I only paid that (original price is $24.95). I like Bill Maher, but putting all of his monologues into a book didn't do much for me. I did chuckle out loud a few times, but I'd rather see and hear him say this stuff rather than read it. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 CMolieri | 12/16/2013

" There's really no explanation needed here. Bill Maher is his usual witty, brilliant, and sassy self. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Scott | 12/10/2013

" While I did laugh in places, and agreed with him in most, I still got sick of the self-righteousness. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Sareena Nunez | 10/14/2013

" Real Time with Bill Maher is one of the best hours on television. This is a wonderful and biting collection of his "New Rules"... "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Emily | 10/11/2013

" A quick, humorous read. And mostly true. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Kevin | 8/27/2013

" Comedian book... Lotta white space... Are there any really good, original comedian books? "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Nancym | 8/17/2013

" Loved Maher's book. It primarily consists of a series of short sarcastic observations. My favorite form of humor. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Keith Bell | 8/8/2013

" Clever in spots but... enh. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lori | 6/14/2013

" Several "laugh out loud" passages in the book. However it is slightly dated since it was written during the Bush Administration. Bill has a way of wording things that we are all thinking but too polite to say! "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 John Wiswell | 8/7/2012

" New rule: we will immediately cease to pretend complaining is a virtue just because you call yourself a social critic. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Hubert | 3/8/2011

" At times funny, but more often, just a tad bullyish and unrelenting, but in a rather unattractive way. I presume people's relationship to humor can be rather personal. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Cyrus | 11/12/2010

" A collection of musings, one-liners & bon mots from one of our better political observers. Great if you're waiting for a bus, but I was hoping for something with a bit more substance from him. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Lisa | 10/8/2010

" I know bill maher can be a total asshole, but this book is funny. and i agree with most of what he says. so, HUZZAH! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Dogseat | 8/30/2010

" Totally loved this book! Smart, political and complete with photos to illustrate points. AND it's a quick read... "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Lindsey | 8/11/2010

" This book would probably get 4.5 stars. I found it mostly hilarious. A quick and entertaining read. Of course Bill manages to offend just about everybody in parts, but a lot of what he says, in a way, makes sense. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Jeff | 2/7/2009

" Some good points. Makes me laugh out loud occassionally. Sometimes it's overkill. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Brian Nordstrom | 12/26/2008

" This is just a rehash of ones that he did on his show. If you watch his show, you have already heard all of them. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Brandi Denson | 4/23/2008

" I love Bill Maher, but if you watch his show as religiously as I, then you've heard every single one of these. They're hilarious and brilliant for the most part, but he marketed the book as if it contained some new material. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Staci | 12/8/2007

" I fell in love with Maher when my husband and I watched 'Politically Incorrect' on HBO. He tells you things straight up. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sandy Randolph | 8/1/2006

" Bill Maher is such an intellectual wit. There are times while reading his book that you can be politically offended to the core or you will be cheering him on and yelling "YES, why don't more people get this." He will make you take sides and if not that, at least he will make you think! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Larry | 6/18/2006

" I love Bill Maher, he's hilarious AND he knows what he's talking about. This is mostly a compilation and I've heard some of this before. But it's worth the couple hours it will take to read, so go read it now. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Ken | 3/1/2006

" Not super interesting in book form; probably funnier as a stand-up routine. On the other hand it only takes a couple of hours to read, so the small investment was worth it. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Barbara | 11/24/2005

" Very funny - probably one of the funniest political books I've ever read. "

" Love me some Bill Maher... "
