In his latest voyage of discovery, Michael Palin reads his own account of a journey into a new Europe. He starts with a simple idea: that only a couple of hours from home is a half of Europe that is for him as unknown and unexplored as the plateau of Tibet or the vastness of the Sahara. " A terrific travelogue to parts of Europe only recently opened up after the fall of communism and its aftermath. Palin, as always, is funny and insightful, and the photography is gorgeous. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Stephen Dawson | 1/8/2014

" More in the same vein as previous Palin explorations. Like others of his more recent expeditions, it lacks a definite route, but explores an interesting and varied part of Europe unfamiliar to many in western Europe. A few countries are omitted but it remains a grand tour and entertaining with it. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sam | 12/14/2013

" Palin's writing really transports you to Europe. From misery at Auschwitz to a fashion catwalk, I smiled and wiped away tears at various points. Very well written travel book with a good dose of history thrown in. Can't wait to read some more of his books. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Steve Butler | 11/1/2013

" Took nearly 2 month to finish as entertaining but a lot to take in as packed full of facts - gives a good an insight into all those places I was previously only vaguely aware of somewhere that never gave us any points in eurvision... "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Steven | 10/26/2013

" An interesting overview of some twenty countries making up 'New Europe' although a little brief on detail at parts. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sharon | 10/20/2013

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Debra | 8/1/2013

" I found this a little difficult to get into to start with. The one thing I have learnt is that I need to brush up on my European geography. So much has changed since I left school. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 ~*kath*~ | 12/5/2012

" Not Michael's best work, but I enjoyed it none-the-less. Could have had more on the day to day events of the crew while they were travelling, that's why I enjoy the books more than the series. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Victoria | 11/11/2012

" A very interesting book and like all travel literature, it made me want to hop on a plane or train. Palin has a beautiful way of writing and his narrative flows nicely. He notes down interesting points to see and do in each place as well as some history and background information. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Chris | 9/26/2012

" Interesting, but only touches on subjects that could be explored so much more. I guess that was the purpose of the tv show though. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Lewis | 6/18/2012

" Good old Palin. It's amazing how much stuff I didn't know about countries right on my doorstep... "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Sarah | 10/26/2011

" I found this to be a little hit and miss. Some chapters were fascinating and really engaging whilst other chapters seemed to pass in a blur- a little like some of the train journeys Palin took! "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Graeme | 8/12/2011
