This wild and wooly western, in the Louis L'amore tradition, comes from renowned author L. J. Martin, whose over 20 novels have brought compelling reading to so many. McBain, broken and beaten from the Civil war, is reluctant to return to his family, as a snake dwells in his belly and he can't get the images out of his mind...until he learns his sister and her family have been murdered. Then it's retribution time.

"One of the better installments of the Falco series, to my mind (and they're all good.) I found the portrayals of Falco's and Helena's grief over their baby's loss resonant and true. I'm not surprised that this was written while the author was grieving, but I'm amazed how much of that particular to losing a CHILD was so masterfully portrayed by someone who hasn't done it. The plot was one of the darker ones she's written, and brought out a side of Falco and Petro that we don't see as much of in the later books (though it's hinted darkly at more in the earlier books, and to some extent while Petro was off self-destructing after his mob-moll affair.) Overall, a fitting addition to the series and another demonstration of Davis' mastery of writing human characters as well as good mystery plots." — Anne (5 out of 5 stars)

" Amazing! Falco at his best. The plot is extremely fast paced and the ending is superb. Fantastic book by Davis. "
" Yes, this is better than some of the more recent ones - enjoyed it a lot "
" There have been better Marcus Didius Falco books, but having been in those "swamplands" southwest of Rome, I did feel the atmosphere a little more than normal! "
" Hmmm- well this was heading for a 3 until the end. It's really a 3.5. For die-hard fans only really. Usual shenanigans in Rome and nearby, engaging characters, nasty criminals, dramatic start and a final twist. "
" You can never get away from family...this volume touches on fathers and families... "
" This was a pretty good episode in the series about Ancient Roman sleuth Marcus Didius Falco, concerning some unsavory relatives of his arch-enemy, the chief spy Anacritis. I enjoy the series and look for new audio books in the library. "
" Davis shines "
" This is her last Falco book. Sigh! "
" An intriguing Falco mystery that pins our intrepid hero against his arch-rival. "
" It kept me interested, albeit it occasionally felt too long. I did like the comfortable relationship between Falco and Helena, and the closeness of their family unit. "
" I love all the Didius Falco books--this one was one of the better written ones, didn't slow down too much like some of them do and it really kept you guessing. "
" Wow--a really dark ending which throws the future of Marcus and his family into shadow. The next book should be interesting. "
" A Roman Whodunit that is quite difficult to follow at times, but it encouraged me to learn more about The Romans. "
