"An incredible first effort by Karen Engelmann. There are some things that are confusing to me and I look forward to discussing this book with others who are lucky enough to read it. The characters, both the good and the evil, are interesting and the story gets better with every page. Awesome book!"

" I am in violent agreement with other readers who were captivated by the start of this book and then disappointed by the thud of the letdown. The first two thirds were marvelous and interesting and then it all fizzled. Even the tying of loose ends which had some clever and diabolical humor to them were clumsily and off-handedly written. The device of the Octavo was inconsistently used and the role of the fan petered out. It truly felt as if the author exhausted her imagination about two thirds through and just wanted tp be done. Perhaps this was too aggressive for a first time novelist. Disappointing. Sigh. "

" Mr. Larsson's wild ride through Gustavian Sweden. As Larsson tries to identify the characters of his mysterious "octavo" on his way to the "golden path" of love and connection, the reader is presented with a number of (not-so-red) herrings and endless detail about 18th-century fans. Complete with penniless flickas, striving fortune hunters, zaftig cross dressers, royals with the usual predilections, and, of course, the woman hell-bent on revenge. "

" interesting concept, weaves many different sub-plots which sometimes got confusing, but suspense built and I needed to finish the book to discover the ending. "

" Fortune-telling, courtly intrigue, and ladies' fans with all sorts of scary powers. This was a decent light read, though to be honest, I was hoping for something a bit more mysterious and complex. "

" Cute period piece set in Sweden at the close of the century about how the events of the day are what connect us to one another. "

" Interesting puzzle is at the center of this historical mystery set in Stockholm during the period surrounding the French Revolution. Engelmann takes her time developing the plot; first 1/3 of the book is a bit of a tedious read. Not sure why I stuck with this book when so many other, more deserving, candidates await on my TBR shelf, though it is very hard for me to abandon a book once I've picked it up! I did learn about Sweden's monarchy .... "

" This book got off to a really slow start and I wasn't even sure what it was really about or what to expect until about halfway through. But after I got that far this was compelling and I couldn't wait for the end to see how it all turned out. "

" I especially enjoyed the historical era in Stockholm. The author,Eleanor Brown, reviews this novel and describes its merits. "A delicious page-turner that brings eighteenth century Stockholm to vivid life, complete with scandal, conspiracy, mystery, and a hint of magic......" "

" Part of the reason I picked up this book was that I know essentially nothing about Swedish history. I was disappointed to learn that, during this period at least, Sweden was very much like the rest of Western Europe. I just wasn't very into this book, even though it did keep me turning pages. "

" I really liked this book. A little magic, a lot of intrigue, all wrapped up in historical events. Slow but steady pace. If you liked Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, this is your light reading. "
