During the mid-1980s, Howard Marks had 43 aliases, 89 phone lines, and owned 25 companies throughout the world. Whether bars, recording studios, or offshore banks, all were money-laundering vehicles serving his core activity: dope dealing.

Marks began to deal small amounts of hashish while doing a postgraduate philosophy course at Oxford, and soon he was moving much larger quantities into Europe and into America. The academic life began to lose its allure. At the height of his career, he was smuggling consignments of up to 50 tons from Pakistan and Thailand to America and Canada and had contact with organisations as diverse as MI6, the CIA, the IRA, and the Mafia. Numerous newspaper profiles, books, and television documentaries have been devoted to Howard Mark's life. Touched with humour, charm, and candour, Mr Nice is his own extraordinary story. " Brilliant, kept me glued to the end. What a character, I could almost hear his rich welsh tones reading it to me! "

" great adventure bio, reads like what james bond should be, if he was a hash dealer. very likable character. Not just a pot book. really an incredible story of howard marks life "

" I'd give this book something between 2 & 3. It's an interesting story. With the right tightening of the story, I'd even give it a 4. Biographies seem to emphasize telling things as they were remembered, rather than telling them for for the benefit of the plot. A re-write with a primary focus on plot would help this book enormously. "

" This is a teriffic book, he come across as being very down to earth, even thogh everyone who is chasing him makes him out to be the worst drug dealer of all time. i enjoyed it very much and at times it is really funny, i liked his relationship with McCann who comes across as really crazy charector. "

" I believe the movie Blow was partially based on this character/book. Really fascinating read, with a touch of humor but the unshakeable feeling of inevitability flowing through the pages. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Todd Walsh | 5/20/2013

" My wife recommended this book while we were at a book store in Thailand. She ended up reading it after I bought it. What a scam! Then I read the book. Interesting character, but probably not interesting enough to write this long of a book about himself. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Matt | 5/12/2013

" Although I do not agree with the type of work this guy did, it was a somewhat fascinating journey he portrayed. Possibly the place where I read it contributed to my appeal of the book (i.e. on the back roads of Cambodia). "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Michelle | 4/14/2013

" This type of book is generally not my style. It was given to me and that is why I chose to read it, but I ended up enjoying it despite what it was about. It gives a different look at the life of a drug dealer. I found it interesting. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Amy Boyd | 3/10/2013

" I don't usually get into Autobiography's. they can be a little dry. But this is so fun, amamzing and a great adventure. By the time you are done, you will be wondering if you should be in criminal law or the criminal! loved it. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Chris | 1/7/2013

" Gave up -- he was mildly amusing, but too full of himself to be interesting. The assumption is that because he is well-known in Britain, he will be widely known worldwide and it's not true. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Jayne | 10/31/2012

" Loved this book, although difficult to keep up with all the characters. Definitely chunks missing for one reason or another. Marks is a loveable, charismatic character who's ideas are very thought provoking. This man could make the pope change his faith, he is that persuasive. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Jeffrey Sorg | 9/2/2012

" Great read! I think GQ said it best, "frequently hilarious, occasionally sad and often surreal." An unbelievable story of one of the most notorious yet affable drug dealers in history. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Brian Schilson | 11/14/2011

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Lysergius | 7/27/2011

" Howard Marks should meet Robert Sabbag and they should write a book together. This was a fun book. He obviously had a lot of good times. Too bad the DEA does not have a sense of humour! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Gerry | 7/7/2011

" A likeable rogue, or a brilliant conman? I like people who reinvent themselves and Howard never stops. A great read, you will be amazed and you will laugh out loud, you might even get to like Howard, or not ... "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Terri | 4/21/2011

    4 stars. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Stuart | 4/11/2011

" Don't read this if you think humankind's laws are any less fallible as any god's. "Mr. Nice" is hilarious, touching, compelling, and insightful, but law-abiding and prudish it is not. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Jayne | 4/10/2011

" This was a facinatingly quick read for such a pagey book. I am impressed that Marks maintained so many details of his jet-setting lifestyle. I'll write the screenplay. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Richard | 3/25/2011

" Not often I cannot finish a book. But halfway through & I have had enough. Remember now why I don't read autobiographies!

If this was supposed to be fiction I may have enjoyed it, but knowing it is based on fact... "
