Publisher Description

This beautifully written, intensely intimate collection explores a subject of nearly universal experience: the psychological push and pull between a mother and a son.

Each story is centered on a transformative moment that alters the delicate balance of power in that relationship and changes the way mother and son perceive one another.

With exquisite grace and eloquence, Toibin writes of men and women bound by convention, by unspoken emotions, and by the stronghold of the past. Many are trapped in lives they would not choose again: if they ever chose at all. Through the unique lens of their complex mother-son relationship, surprising hidden facets of character are revealed.

Award-winning novelist Toibin brings to this stunning first collection of short works an acute understanding of human frailty and longing.

"His bleak style contrasts nicely with the emotionality of the topics. The ending of "A Long Winter" in particular is strong, almost brutal in how much it stays with the physical reality of death. Still, I think some of the themes seem a bit too repetitive and unresolved across all the short stories."

" colm toibin is always a joy to read, even though these stories are far from joyous. Tales of mostly misshapen relationships between -- you guessed it -- mothers and sons, in all sorts of different situations -- all coming together in a sort of darkly luminous collection. "

" I didn't want Mothers and Sons to end. It's melancholy but again, that never bothers me. With subtlety, I think this book effectively explores human loneliness and solitude, while the last book I read, The Effect of Living Backwards, beat you over the head with these themes. "

" Disappointing, considering how much I enjoyed The Blackwater Lightship and the strong emotional reaction I had the first time I read "One Minus One." The stories cover a range of mother/son relationships and various scenarios, and they all ring true. Still, they largely failed to move me. "

" Some of the stories in the collection were amazing writing. Other stories were uneven in the quality of the writing, The stories in Mothers and Sons are heartfelt and some heart wrenching. Colm Toibin is one of my favorite authors. "

" I read this book for a bookclub I was in at the time. I can't say as of this writing that the stories moved me enough to remember any of them. He is a well known author, but this collection I of stories I don't think does his writing justice. "

" Colm Toibin is, amongst contemporary authors, as good as they get when it comes to creating characters of depth and complexity. Even here, within the confines of the short story, he gives us characters that we can relate to and dialogue that rings true. This is a wonderful collection of shories. "
