Publisher Description

Orphaned John Trenchard grows up in the village of Moonfleet with his aunt, entranced by the local legend of the ghostly Blackbeard, who rises each winter night to search for his lost diamond. While conducting his own hunt for the treasure, John is trapped in the church crypt and discovers the true secret of the village: smuggling. Taken under the wing of the gruff innkeeper and chief smuggler, Elzevir Block, John begins a dangerous adventure which will see him in a hair-raising chase along a precarious cliff path and deciphering a hidden code in an ancient castle. Moonfleet is a thrilling story of revenge and betrayal, of loyalty and great sacrifice, but it is above all a story about friendship.

"Originally written in the 1800s, this story appealed to YA and adult readers alike. The tale is told by an orphan boy named John, who becomes entranced by the a story that has long been told in his community - Moonfleet. It is said that a huge diamond was hidden by a deceased roguen callrd Blackbeard who made life miserable for everyone else when he was alive. He lives with a kind innkeeper, Elzevir, whose son was murdered. Unfortunately, Elzevir and several others are involved in smuggling contraband for distribution throughout England. A man is accidently killed when the smugglers are pursued by the sheriff's men. Elzevir is believed to be responsible and is branded a murderer while the truth is that a stray bullet from the sheriff's men killed him. Thus begins the flight of John and Elzevir to avoid the gallows. John unravels the mystery around the diamond and it is retrieved but this is only the beginning of their miseries. Following John and Elzevir throughout their adventures is exciting to say the least. Well done."

" This is a wonderful novel about smuggling that I read when I was a kid. There's a terrifying chapter in which the central character accidentally gets sealed in a family tomb, and a very suspenseful episode involving being lowered into the well of Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight. Highly recommended to all lovers of adventure! "

" started off very slow, didn't find the story compelling until the middle/end. however i loved the amount of detail Faulkner used in his descriptions. "

" Best advice, stick with it. I thought I'd never get through this Old English speak but by Chapter 5 or 25% on Kindle the story takes off and never lets up. One man needed a son, the other needed a father. And through numerous adventures they found the love and trust that comes with that relationship. So glad I read this and hope to share it with my sons one day. "

" I love to escape in wordy, formally styled writing, it gives an insight into values long gone, but also the human qualities that are changeless. Shivery adventures in the night, undertones of terror, this is even better than 'Treasure Island'! "

" This is an older child's classic adventure story of pirates and treasure, a fatherless boy and the gruff, wise father figure who stays with him through thick and thin. I love the language and it is well read in the Librivox version. "
