Publisher Description

Haunted by a series of horrifying and violent episodes in their past, Grace McBride and the oddball crew of her software company, Monkeewrench, create a computer game where the killer is always caught, where the good guys always win. But their game becomes a nightmare when someone starts duplicating the fictional murders in real life, down to the last detail. By the time the police realize what's happening, three people are dead, and with seventeen more murder scenarios available online, there are seventeen more potential victims. While the authorities scramble to find the killer in a city paralyzed by fear, the Monkeewrench staff are playing their own game, analyzing victim profiles in a frantic attempt to discover the murderer's next target. In a thriller populated by characters both hilarious and heartbreaking, a rural Wisconsin sheriff, two Minneapolis police detectives, and Grace's gang are caught in a web of decades-old secrets that could get them all killed.

"I have to say I was suprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I bought with the idea that it would be one of my filler books, you know, a book to fill the time until I get one I really want. As it ended up, this book was one that was started and finished within a 24 hour period. I stayed up all night to finish it, and was amazed that a writing team (mother and daughter) could write such a cohesive, well thought out story. Normally these thriller fillers don't even rate a mention, but this one definitely does."

Quotes

  • “[A] smart thriller…Grace and her four geek partners in the software company they call Monkeewrench add real flavor to the proceedings with their colorful jargon and quirky personalities. These technonerds may be freaks—and one of them may even be a killer—but they have style.”

    — New York Times Book Review
  • “The writing is both assured and seamless…Exceptional character development, dialogue, and lots of local detail make Monkeewrench a winner.”

    — Minneapolis Star-Tribune
  • “A fresh and exciting talent…[An] inventive, deftly written, and thoroughly satisfying thriller.”

    — San Diego Union-Tribune
  • “In addition to the unusual premise, Tracy has peopled this mystery with likable, colorful characters…Tricky plotting, unique suspects, and believable cops have been cleverly interwoven into a first-rate first novel.”

    — Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
  • “Clever plot twists…[An] impressive first-time thriller.”

    — San Jose Mercury News
  • “Stylish, suspenseful, surprisingly funny, and wholly satisfying. Inventive, too. Tracy…deftly juggles several plotlines and a large cast of well-differentiated characters.”

    — Orlando Sentinel
  • “Some great characters, clever dialogue, and suspense.”

    — Daily Oklahoman
  • “The best first novel I have ever read, an exciting thriller filled with misdirection and secret agendas…A suspense thriller that allows no time-outs.”

    — People (Critic’s Choice)
  • “Even the most overly confident reader will be delightfully surprised at the ending.”

    — Entertainment Weekly
  • “Written with such skill and polish that you would think it was Tracy’s tenth…The Minneapolis setting of Monkeewrench and the expertly rendered search for a serial killer are reminiscent of the fine work of bestselling author John Sandford, whose fans definitely will want to pick this one up. Tracy represents a strong new voice in the thriller genre. Monkeewrench is clearly positioned atop the ranks of debuts so far this year.”

    — USA Today
  • “A soundly plotted thriller that fires on all cylinders…Tracy covers all the bases in this debut thriller: an accelerating, unpredictable plot that combines police procedural with technogeek-speak, an array of well-drawn characters, and, most important, witty repartee.”

    — Publishers Weekly (starred review)
  • “[An] entertaining nailbiter…Late-night alert: Don’t settle down with this wacky, supercharged maiden voyage at your bedside till you’ve cleared your schedule for the following morning.”

    — Kirkus Reviews
  • “The two teams of detectives—one from the big city and one from the small town but both with their own quirks, love interests, and insights—prove the sparkle in this engaging debut thriller by a mother-daughter writing team who lace their suspense with humor à la Harlan Coben.”

    — Booklist
  • “Fast, fresh, funny, and outrageously suspenseful, Monkeewrench is the debut thriller of the year.”

    — Harlan Coben, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Six Years

" This was a little bit difficult to get into at first with the author going back and forth to two different murders in two different locations I struggled a bit figuring out who was finding what clues. Once they started merging a bit it ws very enthralling and I found myself enjoying it and the characters! I have already started the next book! "

" It took me a little while to get into this book - seemed to be a lot of characters doing different things at the beginning - I couldn't remember who as who...but once I got to know everyone, I was hooked! Loads of twists and turns - definitely a can't-put-it-down book! "

" Great book! The characters are great. The main characters are a police officer and a female computer geek. The supporting characters are the best. They remind me of the Stephanie Plum novels in the sense that the supporting characters add a whole new dimension to the plot and allow the main characters to be who they need to be and not everything to everyone. Highly recommend. "

" Exciting, fast-paced plot with quirky characters, non-clunky dialogue and clues dribbling in at just the right time to allow the reader to feel that he can almost-but-not-quite unravel the mystery before the characters do. Enjoyment factor somewhat diminished for me due to the frequency of foul language, but overall a satisfying read. "

" I loved this book in the beginning. I thought it was fast paced and somewhat twisted. At some point, the book slowed down really bad and crimes were just mentioned. Also, I thought the ending was predictable. Probably not a series I would continue. "
