Publisher Description

Nothing escapes the snooping opera glasses of Miss Elizabeth Mapp. She whiles away her busy hours observing the small English village of Tilling, and recording the antics in her notebook. But her observations are set to be disrupted by amorous advances of two retired army generals, both vying for her affection. With Miss Mapp distracted, who will keep Miss Susan Poppit in her place or oversee the correct playing of bridge? More importantly will quiet Tilling be subject to a violent duel?

"Kindle versions of a number of Benson's books are now available for free download, which is how I chanced upon this very humorous tale of venomous village life. But no one in Tilling can stay mad for long because they'd have no one left to wrangle with. So the intrigues continue. Laugh out loud stuff."

" Entertaining book set in 1930s (I think) England - in a small town. About the quirky characters who live there. It's a little annoying in places but a nice quick read. "

" You know - I remember loving this book when I read it as a younger person. Now it just comes off as kind of mean. EF Benson clearly hates these people (and they are pretty loathsome). I might be going soft, but I kind of like to root for the folks I spend time with in the fictional world. Which is why I gave up on Entourage. To be fair, these people are far less loathsome than the dudebros on Entourage. But, I think I might be straining the comparison a bit. "

" This book introduces the nosy and scheming Miss Mapp and the eccentric inhabitants of Tilling, Quaint Irene being a special favourite of mine. Laugh out loud funny, and beautifully written, a pure pleasure. "

" Introducing Miss Mapp, Lucia's counterpart and soon-to-be nemesis from another village. Lucia isn't in this one, but it sets up the rest of the series beautifully and is hilarious in its own right, of course. "

" This was about Miss Mapp and how she would sit in her garden room and watch all the people come and go on the High Street. She was involved in a lot of gossip in making it and also a topic. There were a lot of interesting characters and this author does write with some humor as well. "

" I am a little embarrassed that I enjoy these silly novels about English village life in the 1920s so much, but it's kind of a relief to read something where nothing very bad ever happens and the characters do things like drink tea and erect elaborate tableaux vivants. A game of bridge, anyone? "
