Melkin Womper is thrilled to escape his dull future as a village weaver and develop his artis-tic talent when he's apprenticed to Ambrosius Blenk, one of Vlam's most famous masters. Mel is especially excited by the colors that he'll be able to use, since color is a very expensive Pleasure, strictly controlled by the sinister Fifth Mystery.
Mel can't wait to enjoy the wonders of the grand city and begin his important work for Blenk. Instead, his dreams are quickly crushed by the reality of days filled with unimportant tasks and bullying by the other apprentices.
But when Mel and his new friends, Ludo and Wren, inadvertently stumble into a battle between the Fifth Mystery and the Rainbow Rebellion, an underground band fighting to make Pleasures affordable for all, the trio must step through Blenk's paintings into the Mirrorscape. In this alternative world, the friends encounter monsters, mazes, talking houses, angels, and more.
Hugely original and deeply compelling, Mirrorscape is a thrilling adventure filled with the beautiful and the bizarre, the fantastical and the frightening. Enter into an incredibly visual, secret world, where the ultimate weapons are pigment, a paintbrush, and the power of imagination. Download and start listening now!

" Wow! What a wonderful, imaginative, fun-filled romp. It's a rollicking roller-coaster ride of action-packed adventure. It's got good guys, villains, angels, monsters, a dwarf, and lots of art talk--there's even an art glossary in the back of the book. "

" This was fun fantasy with magic, art, apprentices, and imaginative monsters. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Eskana | 1/27/2014

" Although this book has a interesting premise (being able to go into paintings, and there being a whole other world inside paintings) the execution was incredibly poor. The characters were weak and undeveloped, as was the overall plot. I think Wilks should have probably put this in the fabled drawer for a year and worked on it later; as it is, we end up with a book that could have been a fantasy-masterpiece but comes off instead as a crayon drawing. "

" I liked this book. The idea was really creative and the writing was easy to understand. This book felt a bit young for me, but I loved it no less for it. I am looking forward to reading more. "

" Unique premise, fast paced plot. Lots of great connections to art. "

" I actually didn't even finish the book. I had to force myself to read what I did, but in the end I couldn't keep going. The story has a fabulous premise which is what drew me to it in the first place, however the premise alone couldn't make up for the story itself. Sadly, the strange pacing and rather flat characters couldn't keep me interested. "

" This is a Beehive nomination. I thought it sounded really good. I just couldn't get into it. Neither could my daughter. Oh, well. "

" Very less than average. It is a British middle school fantasy. Most of the action in the book takes place in paintings. There is a lot of imagination with out much development of the characters. I there are more books in this series. I will find something better to read. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Florita | 12/12/2013

" I liked it. It has some lovely ideas and gorgeous imagery, and a nice Harry Potter-ish dynamic between the three friends. I don't mean it's a rip-off; just a good example of a friends-together-in-derring-do type children's adventure with a moral about loyalty. Good stuff. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Angie | 11/26/2013

" Reminded me of some similar youth books. Maybe a cross between the Mister Monday series by Garth Nix and Inkheart, maybe? "

" I bought this book in Stockholm and read it on the flight home. It is good. It has lots of artistic terms as it involves a boy who draws pictures and the adventure he has when he learns that there are some pictures you can walk into. "

" Really didn't enjoy this book at all. I thought it was disappointing and I couldn't get in the plot all. I also disliked the characters whihc is probably why I had problems enjoying this story. "

" One Sentence Review: A lot of original ideas were at work here, though it went on much longer than it needed too, I'm afraid. "

" Interesting little read. I never thought I would say this, but this may make a better movie than a book. ( I know, I know, the worst thing a bibliophile can say) It is such a visual book, that if you don't picture a scenario the exact way some action of the book won't make sense. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 MJ | 2/21/2012

" This book is a prime example where a great story with loads of imagination and potential, without great writing end up a bit flat. I never developed any real connection with any of the characters, so it was an 'ok' adventure read. Not sure I will continue the series. "

" Love the concept but not the execution. I am sorely tempted to put aside this book without finishing it, something I rarely do. I just can't seem to get into it. I love the concept, but the plot itself is rather slow and unexciting. I find the characters are not as well-defined as they could be. "
