Publisher Description

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents a novel set deep in the bayou of Louisiana—where the only witness to a long-ago tragedy is a once-grand house…

Declan Fitzgerald had always been the family maverick, but even he couldn’t understand his impulse to buy a dilapidated mansion on the outskirts of New Orleans. Ever since he first saw Manet Hall, he’d been enchanted—and obsessed—with it.

Determined to restore the mansion to its former splendor, Declan begins the daunting renovation room by room. But the days spent in total isolation in the empty house take a toll. He is seeing visions of days from a century past and experiencing sensations of terror and nearly unbearable grief. Local legend has it that the house is haunted, and with every passing day Declan’s belief in the ghostly presence grows.

Only the companionship of alluring Angelina Simone can distract him from the mysterious happenings in the house, but Angelina has her own surprising connection to Manet Hall—a connection that will help Declan uncover a secret that’s been buried for a hundred years.

"I loved it!! A great romance with constant twists and turns, a chilling ghost story where you can never guess what will wind up happening, and a century-old murder mystery that really makes you wonder about old-fasioned southern housewives. There was never a dull moment in this book. I love how Declan and Lena's love flourished. The good ol' southern spirit is shown many times throughout the book. The writting is confusing especially when it changes from present to past or past to present. Nora Roberts really writes beautifully (the details about the southern architecture are amazing) and captures a great image of love and ghosts."

" This book contained a very interesting and compelling story. It was very entertaining to find out the history of the manor which Declan wins at an auction and is working on renovating it. As he is doing so, we discover the place's dark secret, which for some reason is somehow connected with Declan. I really enjoyed reading this really good book. "

" Overall, I liked the book, but the ending was terribly underwhelming and anti-climactic. I was expecting an awesome heart-warming close and it just sort of ran into a wall...bam! and ended. Of cours, I still love Nora Roberts, but this book is not one of my favorites. "

" Okay, I like most NR novels. This one though ranks among my favorites. A young man from New England buys and renovates a delapidated, spooky mansion in the Louisiana bayou country. He begins experiencing events that occurred 100 years earlier there. Not only does he meet these inhabitants, he also meets their real-life descendents, his bayou neighbor grandmother, her lazy druggie daughter, and the beautiful but toughly independent bar owner granddaughter. Together they solve the mystery of what happened in the mansion one fateful night a century ago... "

" I always love Ms Roberts' standalones, her storytelling is effortless. This one was no exception. The romance was lovely, the main characters likeable and honest, and the haunted house scared me when I was reading this at bedtime. "

" Romances aren't my usual fare, but a co-worker lent this to me and I thought, why not? The characters were engaging and the present day plot was interesting enough to keep me reading. However I didn't really enjoy the historical plot that was woven into it- it felt forced. "
