Your sister is going to hell, Jack Nightingale.

Somehow, variations of that line keep former police negotiator Jack Nightingale's life careening in wild, unforeseen directions. And now, as a PI trying to put his life in perspective after his last go-round with the ultimate evil, the chilling phrase returns again. This time it is uttered by a dead woman hanging over a staircase, her neck broken by the laundry cord she tied around it before tossing herself over the banister. But Jack and his sister have been separated since birth.... How can he save someone he's never met?

Jack goes on the hunt for the sister he never knew, but everyone he talks to about her dies horribly. It's as if someone - or something - is determined to keep them apart. If he's going to save his sister, he's going to have to do what he does best: negotiate. But any negotiation with the forces of darkness comes at a terrible price, and first Jack must ask himself a question: is every soul worth saving?

A vise grip of sharp-edged intensity, the second book in the Nightingale trilogy is a relentlessly paced thriller that takes you to the darkest corners of midnight itself.

" Great read. A thriller with a mixture of the supernatural. Second in the Jack Nightingale series. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Jo | 2/7/2014

" This was slightly disappointing as it just felt like a repeat of the first novel only this time it was Jack's sister's soul that needed saving. There were some nice twists and it was enjoyable enough because of the likability of Jack and Jenny. Hopefully the third novel will bring something different. "

" It's a good series. Nothing mind blowing and a little repetitive, but enjoyable. "

" When I first started to read this second outing of Jack Nightingale I had a feeling that it was going to be a repetition of the first book. How wrong I was as Stephen Leather has several twists and turns to keep us entertained. Book three beckons! "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sandra | 12/19/2013

" Loved this book. Supernatural vs detective...guess who wins? "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Anthony | 12/6/2013

" Not quite as creepy as the first book in the trilogy, but the cliffhanger at the end left me saying out loud, "No!" Now I am anxious for book 3! "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Remittance Girl | 12/5/2013

" A very nice continuation of the first of the series, Nightfall. Perhaps a little more meandering from the first, very tightly written novel. But a good read, nonetheless. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Petrina | 12/4/2013

" I like these books, a bit different to the normal detective with supernatural overtones (his evil dad sold his and his sisters soul to the devil). Very spooky website too. "
