In the autumn of 1988, Michael Palin set out from the Reform Club with an ambitious plan: to circumnavigate the world, following the route taken by Jules Verne's fictional hero Phileas Fogg 115 years earlier. The rules were simple. He had to make the journey in 80 days using only forms of transport that would have been available to Fogg. And so, complete with visas, running shoes, an inflatable globe and sound advice from Alan Whicker, Michael Palin began his incredible journey.

Crossing 17 borders and meeting innumerable challenges, he saw Venice from the back of a rubbish barge, rode around the Pyramids on a camel called Michael, and was attacked by a cockatoo in Hong Kong - amongst many other adventures. Phileas Fogg may have brought a Princess back from his travels, but Michael Palin brought back a fascinating and frequently humorous account of the journey of a lifetime.

" It was tolerable mostly, good in a few spots. I would avoid this book unless you don't have better alternatives at that time. "

" A good thing to read if you are thinking you would ever want to try to go around the world in 80 days, because then you will already know you will not get to see much! "

" Not having ever seen the TV series (this or his other journeys) I didn't come to this with any pre-conceived ideas. Enjoyably written, more about the people and the travel than the places. It did make me rather nostalgic for some of my travel memories, and look forward to reading his other books. "

" A fun and informative travelogue; an early outing for the comedian who's made a second career out of this kind of thing. "

" Interesting and fun. Mr. Palin is the voice (audio). By the end, the listener is almost as exhausted as Palin from all the travel. A great way to go around the world without leaving your home. "

" A modern attempt at recreating the old Jules Verne tale. It was ok. "

" I'm listening to this one - fabulous companion to the first travel show Michael Palin did (can it really be almost 20 years ago?). MP is doing the reading and it is a lot of fun. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Terrol Williams | 12/8/2013

" Very pleasant. Palin is a nice, if (surprisingly) not great, reader. Fun to listen to, but not life changing. "

" Excellent read! The last leg from NY to London drags out a bit as nothing really happened. Also the ending is somewhat anti-climatic. But as the saying goes, the fun was in the journey, not the destination. And it was a fascinating journey. Highly recomended read for fans of offbeat travel books. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Pupsi | 11/28/2013

" Reading this book now after such as long gap makes it read more like a history book than a travel book. But it is still enjoyable and his style of writing is very engaging "
