Publisher Description

"This is a book about elderly people. I love this author because she is in her eighties and she manages to write stories that relate to herself very well. I love the way she wraps up the stories tying up all knots in the last two pages. She did it in the other novel I read and she did in in this. Who cares; she is entertaining; refreshing and interesting. I loved this book and I will read many other novels by this very prolific lady."

" I love the English but this might have been just a bit too the English for my taste. Good fun, however. Humour at once dry and madcap. And more oldsters than you'll find in any other novel, I'd bet. "

" For a visceral portrait of early 20th century Edinburgh, this short memoir is a jewel. Otherwise, unless you are obsessed with the truth about Muriel Spark, it is not very interesting. "

" Written in 1958, very interesting style of writing. A bit on the depressing side as it deals with a lot of elderly people and what happens to them (they die). A nice quick read. "

" British novel set in the 50's about old people recieving phone calls about death. Understated humor, keenly defined characters, a lot of fun. "

" Ouch - old age does not always come with being benign. Fun idea. Horrible (in the best sense of the word !) characters. May take the thorn out of growing older, hehehehe..... "

" Weird little book I found on the library shelf - staff recommends. Set in late 1950s among a group of elderly friends. Someone on the phone says, "Remember you must die," and rattles them all. "

" Wittily written and a set up I've never read about before (old people and their vicious rivalries, wills and power play)which makes for an entertaining read. I don't think I got the best from this as I had a break (too long) in the middle so spent some time trying to figure things out again. "
