"I don't usually read collections of short stories because I find it hard to leave the characters so soon. It was especially hard to leave the characters and their stories in this collection! Each story was complete and complex in its own way and even though I was able to let go of each "story", I was glad to read another."

" Wow. Best book I've read in a long while. Crystal-clear prose, and the characters have incredible depth for the inhabitants of works of short fiction. Wonderfully moody pieces. Fantastic. "

" A really great collection of short stories. A bad subway read, however- there's a lot to these deceptively simple tales and they should be savored somewhere quiet - not breezed through, half asleep on your morning commute. I will have to revisit this book sometime soon - many of these stories are worth a second read! "

" A marvelous short story collection. Most, if not all, of the stories are readable and excellent. She sounds familiar, like I might have read her in the New Yorker. Bottom line: it's okay to be human without pretense, that's what I got from reading her stories. "

" I love short story collections and this one didn't disappoint. It was insightful and poignant throughout. I'll have to check out Tessa Hadley's other books. I picked this one up at the library on a whim. "

" Well-written stories, quite British and contemporary, but somehow the ending never seems to make a point rather than just fading off ... I had liked her novel The London Train, so this was a bit of a disappointment, although I did read every story and they were engaging. "

" Well-written. Two stories were more interesting to me that the others: the first story, "Married Love," and a later one, "Journey Home." I would have liked both of those stories to have been longer. "Married Love," in particular, seemed to halt too early. "

" Well its really just a collection of life and relationship stories! Just the first story is called "married love". Some stories are better than others but the author is great at bringing out nuances of relationships! I liked best "she the one" and "pretending" "

" interesting short story book looking at relationships and the prose is well written and take you away in to the world of different families and situations where people express their feelings differently and I some of the story complex and others just simple feelings "

" I think Tessa hadley writes skillfully but I found I prefer her novels. Check out Accidents in the Home. She has an incredible ability to write about the nuances of relationships and to get into her characters heads. "

" I loved short stories many years ago, but found myself moving away from them in favor of more intricate plot and character development. The stories in this book, about ordinary people in ordinary situations, reminded me of my earlier love. "
