Publisher Description

Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, and stole women's undergarments. Obedience school did no good -- Marley was expelled.

But just as Marley joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley remained a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

Marley & Me is John Grogan's funny, unforgettable tribute to this wonderful, wildly neurotic Lab and the meaning he brought to their lives.

"I just loved this heart warming story and was balling my eyes out by the end! Read it during the Christmas break snow storm of December 2008; the snow hadn't started yet, but it was coming. school closed at 5am and my family and I headed for Boston. We arrived by 9am prepared to wait, but due to the weather the hotel wasn't busy and our room was ready! just as we reached our room, the snow began to fall. We were on a high floor and the view combined with the storm was just beautiful. Everyone was tired, as we had left so early to beat the storm. My husband climbed into one bed, my son and I into the other and as they drifted off to sleep, I snuggled up with Marley and Me!"

Quotes

  • “Dog lovers will delight in the antics of Marley, a yellow lab, as he happily terrorizes the Grogan household. John Grogan, columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, reads this account of life with, arguably, one of the world’s worst dogs…You can hear the affection in Grogan’s voice, even as he relates his frustrating, humbling, and humiliating experiences with such a lovable menace. Grogan starts out reading a bit stiffly, but he soon finds his groove and delivers a listening experience that will keep one wishing for a longer commute.”

    — AudioFile
  • “A humorous and loving tribute…Throughout, the family is steadfastly devoted to this badly behaved yet totally lovable and loyal pup…Readers…whose dogs would qualify for the ‘Bad Dog Club’ will delight in this tribute.”

    — Library Journal
  • “A warm, friendly-memoir-with-dog.”

    — Booklist
  • “If you know someone who claims there’s not a book in the world that can make him cry, give him this one. It won’t even matter if he’s not a dog lover. He’ll cry anyway. Trust me.”

    — Chicago Sun-Times
  • “[Marley & Me] took my breath away. I laughed. I cried…What a gift…immortalizing a dog who will always hold a very special place in the hearts of each family member.”

    — Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Labrador retrievers are generally considered even-tempered, calm, and reliable; and then there’s Marley, the subject of this delightful tribute to one Lab who doesn’t fit the mold…Delivered with great humor. Dog lovers will love this account of Grogan’s much loved canine.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “A very funny valentine…Marley & Me tenderly follows its subject from sunrise to sunset…with hilarity and affection.”

" I loved this book and of course I cried at the end. I know many people may not read this knowing Marley died but he had a good life with a family that put up with his mischief ways that brought humor to the family. I had a Marley myself but not as funny as this Marley. "
