Ce'Nedra, Imperial Princess of Tolnedra, is confused. Everyone knows the tales of the Orb protecting the West from the evil god Torak are just silly legends. But here she is, forced to join a dangerous quest to recover that stolen Orb. No one believes in sorcery, but Garion's aunt and grandfather seem to be the fabled sorcerers Polgara and Belgarath, who would have to be thousands of years old.

Even young Garion is learning to do sorcery. He's just a farm boy, totally unsuitable for an Imperial Princess. Yet for some reason, she has the urge to teach him, brush back his tangled hair, and comfort him. But he is going to a strange tower in the center of all he believes evil, to face some horrible, powerful magician, and she can't be there to watch over him. She may never see him again!

Thus continues The Belgariad, an epic prophecy still unfolding.

" I love this book! We meet Beldin "It rained on me a couple months ago." and Relg, the Ulgo zealot "I've had impure thoughts about women." Love love love! "

" Read it as a teenager about 15 years ago for the first time and loved it then, so I decided to give it a go as an adult as well. It wasn't as brilliant as I thought back in the 90's but very readable for sure. "

" I loved these books. I know that David Eddings wanted to make a point that history keeps repeating its self but I found that it bugged me a little bit. That is the only thing that I did not like all that much. The writing and stories are amazing and I will read this series over and over again. This series is right up there with the best. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Heather Browning | 1/26/2014

" This book had a 'middle book' feel, as it didn't have a clear start or end that were distinct from the books before and after. However, it feels like a darker turn for the series. The journey through Maragor was genuinely creepy. The almost psychopathic glee most of the characters take in committing acts of murder also becomes somewhat chilling after a while. I get that fighting to the death is a staple of this sort of story, but they really seem to seek it out and enjoy it. I wasn't impressed with the chapters from Ce'Nedra's point of view, reading her from the outside I can forgive a lot as I fill in what I imagined to be her vulnerabilities as a scared teenage girl, but seeing 'inside' just shows her to be shallow and vacant, which was a pity. Given where she's supposed to be going, I would assume Eddings wants her to be a sympathetic character, but he hasn't written her well enough for that yet. "

" Just couldn't get into it as much as I tried. There are some nice stretches and Eddings certainly devotes a lot of time/energy to creating his world, but I found it tediously redundant as the characters traveled from one waypoint to another.... "
