Publisher Description

The town psychiatrist has decided to switch everybody in Pine Cove, California, from their normal antidepressants to placebos, so naturally—well, to be accurate, artificially—business is booming at the local blues bar. Trouble is, those lonely slide-guitar notes have also attracted a colossal sea beast named Steve with, shall we say, a thing for explosive oil tanker trucks. Suddenly, morose Pine Cove turns libidinous and is hit by a mysterious crime wave, and a beleaguered constable has to fight off his own gonzo appetites to find out what's wrong and what, if anything, to do about it.

"Quite frankly, I loved this book from beginning to end. It made me laugh out loud in places, and in fact read out loud portions to my fiance. It had an interesting structure, telling the story from multiple viewpoints (including that of a sea monster and a dog), and the writing was tight and strong. It was a fast read, a fun mish-mash of sea creatures, humans (both crazy and not), drugs (both legal and illegal). Two thumbs up."

Quotes

  • “As funny as writing gets.”

    — Toronto Star
  • “Reads like Christopher Moore laughed his head off while writing it, quite possibly taking hits of nitrous oxide between sentences…He could win National Book Awards for titles alone.”

    — Miami Herald
  • “Moore is Daniel Pinkwater for grownups, but a lot funnier; and his irreverent antics reveal a buoyant wit and surreal authority even while rendering the emotional range, sex life, and murderous tendencies of a sea monster.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Wyman’s soft, congenial voice proves perfect for Moore’s sardonic yet bemused tone, especially when paired with characters such as Constable Theophilus Crowe. Wyman maintains a nuanced and steady narrative while also portraying a cast of multiple species with eccentric and, often, slightly perverted personalities.”

" It's definitely fiction and a 'wee bit whacky' would be an understatement....It takes place in Pine Cove, California (fictional???) and the town psychiatrist has switched everyone from their normal antidepressants to placebos. It involves a sea beast named 'Steve'.....let the games begin! "

" I love this book. It's one of those books that you should take to an appointment and read while you sit giggling to yourself in the waiting room (you get bonus points if it's a psychologists office, mine was a family practice, but the other patients sure looked concerned). "
