Lady Novella Crownley has been teaching at a girl’s school far from her ancestral home, Crownley Hall, when one day her mother asks her to return home. She leaves at once, only to find that much has changed since her last visit. Her beloved father, the Earl of Crownley, had died some years earlier, leaving her mother lonely and unable to cope on her own. Unknown to Novella, her mother has remarried, and the first time Novella meets her new stepfather, Lord Buckton. She does not like him at all.

In Novella’s absence, Lord Buckton has been selling off everything at the Hall he can lay his hands on to pay for his debts and lavish lifestyle, and he even has plans to sell the house and the estate as well. To her horror, Novella finds that he has sold her favorite horse, Salamander, to a near neighbor, Sir Edward Moreton. Novella is deeply suspicious of the charming and handsome Sir Edward, but her heart softens when he invites her to ride Salamander again. Soon Novella’s mother becomes seriously ill, and Novella is forced to clash with her stepfather over the cost of medical care.

Novella’s relationship with her stepfather worsens while her feelings for Sir Edward begin to intensify. She comes to realize that she is in great danger from Lord Buckton, who’s determined to take everything from her and her mother at any cost. How Novella is able to defeat the forces ranged against her with the help of Sir Edward and find her own true love is told in this exciting and dramatic romance.

About the Author
Author Barbara Cartland

Barbara Cartland (1901–2000) was one of the world’s most prolific novelists, writing an amazing 723 books in her lifetime, of which no fewer than 644 were romantic novels. Worldwide sales of her books have approached or exceeded one billion copies. Her first book—an immediate bestseller—was written at the age of twenty-one. The demand for her books was so strong that over her last two decades Cartland increased her output and wrote an incredible 400 romances, penning her final one at the age of ninety-seven. Her books have always been immensely popular in the United States, where in 1976 a pair of them occupied the top two spots in the B. Dalton bestsellers list—a feat never achieved before or since by any author. Cartland became a legend in her own time, and her books will always be treasured for their moral message, her pure and innocent heroines, her handsome and dashing heroes, her blissfully happy endings, and above all for her unwavering belief in the positive power of love.
