It's Nina Landry's birthday, and she's supposed to have her kids ready to leave in a few hours for a Christmas holiday in Florida with her new boyfriend. But her 15-year-old daughter, Charlie, spent the night at a friend's and hasn't come home yet. Not by 10 a.m., not by 11.....

Nina is getting angry - they have a plane to catch, and Charlie hasn't even bothered to pack. As time passes, slower and slower by the minute, Nina becomes uneasy. Her anger gives way to worry, and that worry quickly builds into panic.

By 1 p.m., she's wondering if Charlie has run away or if something far worse happened. And why won't anyone - not the cops, not Charlie's friends, not Charlie's father - take her disappearance seriously?

As day turns to night at Nina's home on Sandling Island, 60 miles from London, a series of ominous secrets leads Nina from sickening suspicion to deadly certainty. The question becomes less whether she and her daughter will leave the island in time and more whether they'll ever leave it again. Download and start listening now!

" This is the first book Ive read from this author (husband/wife team) and I loved it. Its a thriller and it kept me guessing until the very end! "

" OUTSTANDING!!! This is the first time I've read anything by the husband/wife team who form the pseudonym of Nicci French, and I must say that I was VERY pleasantly surprised. I started reading late last night and was finished within a 24-hour period, which is a rarity for me. I had the book clutched in my hands all day today, only taking two short breaks for lunch and dinner. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, and didn't want to put it down until I'd reached the end. It was wonderfully written, perfectly paced, and suspenseful from start to finish. The fact that there are no chapters might normally bother me, but for this, it totally worked; the story is written in real-time, and to have broken it into sections would have detracted from the story by creating unnecessary pauses. Not everyone seems to have appreciated the ending, but I personally liked it. Now if only I had someone to discuss it with while it's fresh on my mind. :) "

" Very hard to put down as I just needed to know what happened next! Excellent! "

" Summer is always when I completely immerse myself in mysteries and thrillers -- I have fairly low expectations beyond being entertained. This one surprised me. It was well-written, engaging, moving. All this, despite the fact it is a fairly conventional plot for the genre. It manages to make all the convenient coincidences believable, avoid all the annoying twists that drag things on and on, and a protagonist who isn't perfect but who I liked and who acted in ways I could believe, if not always understand. I highly recommend it ... "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Clare | 1/18/2014

" It always amazes me how an author can write about one day in the life of a person and make an entire book about it. French does this quite well and also captures a mother's anguish when she realizes her teenage daughter may be missing. I'd like to read some more by French (actually the husband/wife team of Sean French and Nicci Gerrard). "

" Impossible to put down, and there are no chapter divisions, which adds to the cannot-put-down feeling. Told in "real time" (as much as that is possible in a novel). The heroine in this book is extraordinary--and you don't have to be a mother to relate to how she goes about trying to find her daughter. "

" If you can - read it in one sitting as you won't want to put it down. A 'Real time' book. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Carrie Sexton | 12/30/2013

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Amanda | 12/17/2013

" The most un-put-downable book I've read. The authors managed to create such a pace to the story of a mother trying to find her missing daughter - you could feel her panic and frustration as if it were your own. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 LaDawn | 12/5/2013

" A fantastic thriller. I couldn't put it down. I agonised every moment of this mother's gripping search for her daughter. Will be reading more Nicci French! "

" Best book I had EVER read! So tension building, quite a moderate read not to slow nor to fast- took me around 5 hours I was so in the story I must of been in it! Nicci French...amazing how they both write the stories in such suspense! "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sherry Friend | 9/7/2013

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Margot | 6/1/2013

" A bit meandering to start but concludes with lots of action. A good quick read with always riveting subject matter-mother's search for her missing child. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Holly | 9/1/2012

" Super generic mysetery. Predicatble. No Suspence. The only slightly interesting thing about this book is it is a English novel so the English references and culture are slightly cool to reference. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Tony | 1/12/2012

" Well I enjoyed this book start to finish. Several twists and turns. A couple of red herrings. Police intransigence and parental desperation. However, a couple of untied threads and a conclusion that didn't provide closure, for me, anyway. Still, a worthwhile read I'm happy to recommend. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Ralph Sorensen | 11/7/2011

" This got better as it went along. Certainly made you think about how you would react if you found out your child was missing. Would I have been that tenacious? It was the kind of book that stays with you for a while after you finish it. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Nancy | 3/31/2011
