One of the most pessimistic Russian writers, Leonid Andreyev (1871 1919) describes in this novel (inspired by an actual event) the last night in the lives of seven people condemned to death. They are two criminals and five terrorists found guilty of an aborted attempt against the life of an important bureaucrat. They come to the conclusion that even if they failed, they were successful: they go to gallows as brothers. It is a novel that describes human sentiments and it is ultimately an impressive song of faith.

" This version was poorly edited/translated, but despite this I was able to see how genius the story must be in the original language. "

" Good book. Shorter and much easier to read than many Russian novels. It had some unique insights the subject of capital punishment and the thoughts of convicts facing a certain time of death. I'm glad I read it. "
