Publisher Description

Considered the greatest novel in Italian literature, Manzoni himself described it as a collection of tragedies of horrors and scenes of wickedness with intervals of virtuous feats. But the greatest thing in this novel is its argumental richness that has as a background in the Thirty Years War and the Spanish invasion of Italy.

"I read this when I was about 10 years old because it was one of the few books available to me. I missed half of what was going on but it remains a favorite."

" It's a great story, but really difficult to read. Manzoni goes into great detail, where detail isn't always necessary. I am reading it because I am assigning to my students this summer. I don't think I'd read it otherwise. Perhaps after I do more research into the story, I'll appreciate it more! "

" Not the Italian wonder! This was an historical novel that had way to much history that did not involve any characters at all. Painful! "

" I couldn't finish it. The author was too long winded. It is a good story with some good characters. Someday I'll finish it. Reminds me a lot of Les Mis. "
