Award-winning Australian author Melina Marchetta has created a strong and sassy role model in Josephine, whom girls with growing pains on both sides of the Pacific will love.
Josephine Alibrandi is 17 and in her final year of school. Dealing with her mum and the ways of her Nonna are daunting enough as she prepares for her exams. But Josie is about to discover real life gets in the way of her carefully-made plans. She suddenly has to deal with having her father around for the first time in her life, falling in love, and uncovering her family's secret background. Despite all the turmoil, this is the year Josie discovers that emancipation doesn't mean escaping from your past. Sometimes you need to face up to who you are in order to set yourself free.

"After reading Saving Franchesca and Jellicoe Road, I'm reminded why I tend to read books by the same author in the order they are written, even if they are unrelated. I was disappointed that the quality was as good as the other two, but as a work of it's own I have to say it was still good. I read it in two sittings, which is great usually. In the end though, I think it was a bit predictable. I definitely saw the plot lines coming a mile away, which was not my experience when reading other books by Marchetta. I guess that tells a lot about how she's grown as a writer and I continue to seek out her books." — Tania (4 out of 5 stars)

" I read the Indonesian verse. It's been a few years ago. I don't even remember the story. But all I know,I don't like this book "
" Pretty slow moving and not as gripping as Saving Francesca or The Piper's Son. "
" Good book, also a good movie. "
" Unoriginal, uninspired. The characters are not unpleasant, but the story is unremarkable. "
" A beautifully written story of a teenager groing up with a big family, an out there mother, a daunting school and an even more daunting guy. A real chicky book. "
" Despite still being brilliant, this is my least favourite Marchetta book. Though I would still recommend it to everyone. However, make sure you read Jellicoe road or Saving Francesca first. "
" Not too terrible... unless you compare it to Jellicoe Road. In that case, yeah, it's pretty terrible. "
" I had high expectations of this novel;unfortunately, it didn't meet those expectations. Whilst it was quite readable, it didn't do much for me and I wouldn't read it again. "
" an italian girl finding out her past "
" Aku suka buku ini. Temanya masih nggak jauh beda sama The Alchemist. Nyari diri sendiri. "
" I liked it, but at times I thought it could be better. Still, I'm glad I've read it, cause although I liked the movie more, the book gives you a better insight into Josephine's head and personality, which I liked. "
" good book only read chapter 1 i would recommend it to a person that is not a very good reader "
" I absolutely adore Australian prep-school stories for some reason, and this one is a great addition to the description. "
" this is one of my favourite books of all time. I related to the character but also found her incredibly inspiring. It is one of those rare 'coming of age' stories that perfectly expesses what that time feels like. Its also enjoyable to read and just so beautiful! "
" Who doesn't love this book? Teen trials and tribulations with an ethnic tinge that is eccentric yet totally relatable. "
" Had to read it for a drama assignment but it was pretty good "
" Had to read it for school. "
" My hate for this book will follow me through life. "
" Funny, written with raw honesty and so utterly likable. I totally related to Josephine. I laughed out loud with her, I felt sad, worried, embarrassed with her. Marchetta is incredible. "
" A simmply beautiful novel. Filled with warmth and truth. Very easy to relate to and extremely difficult not to love. A must for any European woman living in Australia. "
" Read this twice, both times for English classes. "
" Listened to this book on tape with my mom (back in the day). Such an honest narrator, a times funny, and also sad and moving. "
" The first of Melina Marchetta's books. Good characters. Good romance. Didn't love it as much as her others. I LOOOVED the others. "
" It was ok, but I felt like I was just following a teen-aged girl around for a year. "
