Zoe Luce is a successful interior designer in the Arizona town of Whispering Springs who's developed an unusual career specialty - helping recently divorced clients redesign their homes, to help them forget about the past and start anew. But Zoe knows that some things can't be covered up with a new coat of paint. And when she senses that one of her clients may be hiding a dark secret, she enlists P.I. Ethan Truax to find the truth. Working together, they solve the mystery...and barely escape with their lives. But Ethan's exquisite detection skills are starting to backfire on Zoe: she never wanted to let him find out about her former life; she never wanted to reveal her powerful, inexplicable gift for sensing the history hidden with a house's walls; she never wanted him to know that "Zoe Luce" doesn't really exist. She never wanted to fall in love with him. Now, no matter how much she resists, Ethan may be her only hope - because the people she's been running from have found her. And just when Zoe dares to dream of a normal life and a future with the man she loves, her own past starts to shadow her every step - and threatens to take her back into a nightmare. Listener Opinions

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Maria | 2/19/2014

" First in a two-part series (followed by Truth or Dare), this book is a great re-read . Ethan Truax is a very believable three-times-divorced and financially bankrupt private investigator starting all over again in Whispering Springs. Zoe Luce (formerly Sara Cleland) is a less believable widow and fine arts major who feels emotions in the walls of rooms, particularly rooms where violence has occurred. She has relocated to Whispering Springs after escaping from the asylum in which her in-laws have imprisoned her and has started an interior design business. It is a credit to the skills of Jayne Ann Krentz that she makes a believer out of you before the end of the book. A truly delightful tale in spite of the foray into sixth sense fiction, it is well worth reading over and over again, which I do, and it is very telling that I have trouble putting it down every time. I wish I had a dollar for every hour of sleep I have lost thanks to JAK's books. You would think it would get easier when you know what's going to happen, but unfortunately for my sleep deficit, it doesn't. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Heather | 2/18/2014

" I think the decision to create a hero who is something other than fabulously wealthy is always interesting. Refreshing. I'm basically a fan of this JAK and the sequel -- they're fun and I like the characters. Observation: to create the laconic, simple-yet-manly hero, JAK-style, drop the initial pronoun from the sentence. Thus we have "Never thought of that." And "Thought you'd see it that way." Effective. Unfortunately, once you notice it, you will notice it everywhere until it drives you crazy. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 April | 2/11/2014

" At the beginning of this book I would have rated it 3 stars. However, as I read I got attached to the characters (Ethan Truax, a self-employed private eye and Zoe Luce, an interior designer--not decorator, thank you very much!)and found myself eager to solve the mystery. This was my first Jayne Ann Krentz novel and I will definitely read the continuing saga in Truth or Dare. While this book has a few red-hot scenes, it focuses more on the mystery. "

" Heavy on plot and predictable language. But kept me interested while driving. Zoe is an interior designer on the run from the asylum her greedy in-laws forced her in to. Ethan Trueaxe is a P.I. she hires. They get married. I have no idea what the title refers to. "

" One of my all time favs. Can't say how many times I've read it. Great for a new comer to JAKs works in that it has a great cast, good plot, & quick action. There are paranormal elements but they don't overshadow the rest of the book. "

" Picked it up as a "snack" read--a beach book for a beachless summer. Enh. This is probably the third time I've tried Jayne Ann Krentz. There are just too many cutsy dialogue bits and cardboard character development. "
