Lazarillo de Tormes, by an anonymous author, is the most representative of the Spanish picaresque genre. In this novel, Lázaro de Tormes relates his childhood and adolescence, the different masters he served, and everything he learned in his struggle for survival. It is a work full of criticism of the society from that period, of sorrows and joys...and, above all, of wittiness. "Even though this book was in Spanish I really enjoyed it. I felt that the author kept the reader interested in the topic and in Lazarillo's life. It was a different style of literature for me. I liked that in every chapter there was always something new popping up in his life, after his mom has to let him go to be on his own."

" Possibly more interesting as literary history than as an actual story, though the descriptions of hunger and destitution can be quite vivid. Still, it was quite a bold book, mocking of all walks of society in the 1550s, including priests, during the Inquisition. "

" Anonymous was written in 1554. The term "lazarillao" was used to designate a young boy who was a guide. In this book the boy was sold by his mother upon his father encarceration. Lazrillo strugles from one master to the other and as he grew served in different capacity. Finaly he got married and had his own life. "

" Another early novel in Spanish, the classic "picaresque," starring a little scoundrel or picaro (with an accent on the first syllable). Surprisingly modern and witty in tone, as is Don Quixote, the later and more commonly cited prototypical novel in Spanish. "

" It was in Spanish, and therefore, very hard for me to read, considering I SUCK at reading Spanish. I think I would've liked it better in English, just because it would have made my life simpler. :) "
