Publisher Description

A killer is on the loose, blurring the line between fact and fiction. His prey—the writers of crime novels who have turned psychological profilers into the heroes of the nineties. But this killer is like no other. His bloodlust shatters all the conventional wisdom surrounding the motives and mechanics of how serial killers operate. And for one woman, the desperate hunt to uncover his identity becomes a matter of life and death.

Professor Fiona Cameron is an academic psychologist who uses computer technology to help police forces track serial offenders. She used to help the Met, but vowed never to work for them again when they went against her advice and badly screwed up an investigation as a consequence. Still smarting from the experience, she's working a case in Toledo when her lover, thriller writer Kit Martin, tells her a fellow crime novelist has been murdered. It's not her case, but Fiona can't help taking an interest.

Which is just as well, because before too long the killer strikes again. And again. And Fiona is caught up in a race against time, not only to save a life, but to bring herself redemption, both personal and professional.

Rich in atmosphere, Killing the Shadows uses the backdrops of city and country to create an air of threatening menace, culminating in a tense confrontation between hunter and hunted, a confrontation that can have only one outcome.

"Very suspensful yarn by an author that's recently new to me. There are several storylines throughout this novel making it just complex enough to be fascinating. In the primary plot, authors of crime novels are the victims of a serial killer whose motive is not clear for most of the book. An academic psychologist (Professor Fiona Cameron) uses technology to help police solve serial murderers. Her partner is an author who is targeted, and Fiona leaps in with both feet to save his life. The individual plots all come together perfectly in the end, making the experience satisfyingly worthwhile. Love this author and will read more."

" I've read all of her Tony Hill series, but this is a standalone story. Not quite as good as the heroine is unsympathetic and grumpy a lot of the time, the plot is very far-fetched, but the story got me gripped and I didn't guess the villain in advance. "

" This is a stand alone novel that takes a slightly different look at how a psychologist is able to help police solve crimes. Of course the psychologist is dragged into the crime, if not you don't have a story. It's an enjoyable read though the ending is a big of a let down. "

" I like Val McDermid's books and this is no exception- some positives in that the heroes are less angst ridden than Tony Hill and side kick but these characters not as well developed. Lighter than a lot of her books. "

" Val McDermid writes some great psychological thrillers. There is quite a variety of opinions on this one, but I liked it. It's fast-paced, well-written, and has some good characters who I wouldn't mind meeting again, but I gather this is a stand-alone. "

" I read this on the Nook because Stieg Larsson mentioned the author in one of his books. I've never read a book with so many grammatical errors in it. There must have been a poor proof reader or poor translator here. I liked it but felt it was slow going at times. It had moderate interest. "

" This book was a bit more gruesome than ones I normally read, about a serial killer killing authors of serial killer books, and mainly about a Psychologist whose expertise is about crime linkage (but is also married to an author).Good book with an unexpected twist. "

" Better than some of hers I read, but a rather self indulgent plot--someone is killing mystery writers in the same manner as characters in their books. Good characterizations and a plot that keeps you guessing. Although here the tie up with another crime is a bit off the wall and a stretch. "
