In Just Listen, veteran psychiatrist and business coach Mark Goulston reveals the secret to how to get through to anyone, even when productive communication seems impossible, and presents remarkably effective tools and techniques you can use whenever a job, a sale, or a relationship hangs in the balance. Goulston has proven these strategies during his own thirty-year career as a business coach at companies such as GE, IBM, Goldman Sachs, Kodak, Federal Express, Hyatt, and Disney. He has also trained FBI and police hostage negotiators to handle life-or-death situations.

With this powerful yet engaging audio book, you’ll learn how to:

• Get the attention of a total stranger who you need to know—like that potential client you absolutely must land

• Talk an angry person up from an instinctual (irrational) state to receptivity, and finally to rationality—a skill that can save a job, a marriage, or even a life

• Use the “Magic Paradox”—a technique the author developed for hostage negotiators in which you turn a negative person into an asset

• Master the critical art of buy-in (the foreplay of negotiation, persuasion, and selling) by moving anyone through the “Persuasion Cycle”

Barricades between people become barriers to success, progress, and happiness; so getting through is not just a fine art, but a crucial skill. Just Listen gives you the techniques and confidence to approach the unreachable people in your life, and turn frustrating situations into productive outcomes and rewarding relationships.

" Book of communication/interaction techniques for improving relationships. Some of the techniques were helpful, like asking q's that demonstrate empathy and "being interested vs. trying to sound interesting" but much of this book borders on manipulation. In one instance, Goulston describes a work situation where someone is leading a project supported by "losers." To improve the prospects for the project, Goulston suggests meeting with these people and telling them how impressive they are. "

" Everyone at some point has a message that they want to get across to someone else. The problem is when we all have messages that we are trying to communicate to each other; then everyone is speaking, and no one listens. In Just Listen, you learn very practical ways to connect empathic ally with people in order to listen to them and help them feel felt. Chocked full of helpful insights to listen well, connect with people and help build bridges, the major downside of this book is that it is so practical, so helpful, that at times the reader feels like he / she can't possibly remember all the ways to connect with others. " If I could I would give this book 6 stars! I just finished it and I'm getting ready to go through it and read it again for a second time. Most authors write an entire book based around a single chapter of Just Listen, so I felt like I got 30 excellent books for the price of one. His points are each unique but succinct and easy to read. He backs up what he says with examples that make his ideas easy to understand and immediately applicable. If you are working with difficult people or need to know how to motivate others, get this book and read it. The only caution is that the ideas won't work if you don't apply them and the book is so easy to read, it'd be tempting just to plow through it without digesting and memorizing the ideas and that would make the book enjoyable, but ultimately pointless. So put in the work and this book unlocks the secret of how to become an amazing communicator with even the most difficult people! "
