"Just a Minute was a great book. It was exactly what the title said: a trickster tale and counting book. In the story Grandma Beetle was visited by Senor Calavera. In the book Senor Calavera is the only Spanish phrase that is not also said in English. Looking at the pictures, children will know that Senor Calavera is a skeleton man. He wants her to go with him but she tricks him and stalls by doing tasks to prepare for the party. With each new task Senor Calavera gets more and more impatient. This is because every task gets bigger and bigger. For example her first task starts with one, the next with two, and so on. This is the counting part of the book. The numbers are also said in Spanish and English. This book teaches kids the basic counting number up to ten in a fun way. The double page spreads of pictures help depict the number and the task. Kids will enjoy Grandma Beetle's clever thinking to trick Senor Calavera."

" In this trickster tale and counting book, Yuyi Morales writes a funny story about Senor Calavera who tries to get Grandma Beetle to come with him. "Just a minute" Grandma Beetle continues to tell him as she prepares for a party. As Senor Calavera waits for her, he counts in spanish and tries his best to be patient. This book is perfect for Kindergarten or even the beginning of first grade, especially for anyone who is exposing their students to Mexican heritage. Senor Calavera is a skeleton and I can't wait to read this story to some of the children in my classes this month! "

" Just heard her speak at a conference, so we checked out all the books we could so we could see her work. I didn't know exactly what to expect, and was thrilled. In the conference I enjoyed her background, especially when she decided to write about her culture. Such a clever story and great art. "

" This is a very sweet book about abuelita tricking death. I only wish Morales had incorporated more Spanish into the story and illustrations. She could have done the names of fruit, or foods, or translated phrases like "just a minute". "
