Publisher Description

Vitality floods its pages. Philosophers and kings, warriors and merchants, poets and financiers come alive as the story ranges across time and the globe. From ancient Palestine through Europe and the Orient, to America and modern Israel, Max Dimont shows how the saga of the Jews is interwoven with the history of virtually every nation on earth.

Brilliantly narrated in a thousand and one episodes, this newly revised and updated edition tells the story of a people escaping annihilation and cultural death, fighting, falling back, advancing. Infused with an almost miraculous life force, they have survived the death of civilizations and have triumphantly contributed to man’s spiritual and intellectual heritage for some four thousand years.

"OK, let's be honest. This is a history book, so it isn't a light, easy read. But it is an incredibly interesting book. It sheds a whole new light on what I learned of Jewish history in Hebrew School while I was growing up. It turns out that Jews weren't the only group persecuted by the ancient Greeks and Romans, or the Roman Catholic Church. And, the Inquisition wasn't aimed so much at the Jewish people as it was at percieved Catholic heretics. There is much more to Jewish history between the end of the Golden Age and the 20th century than being locked into ghettos. If you want a different perspective on Jewish history, and don't mind reading a fairly densely written book, this one might just provide the new perspective you're looking for."

" This history of the Jewish people is as full as the Torah itself. At all points, the text is rich, well researched and authentic. The theme of the diaspora and the analysis of the Jewish people as chosen and set apart strikes so true. Well done. "

" This book was very readable and really did a good job of capsulizing the history of the Jews. The more contemporary sections were extremely well written and managed to be an excellent and objective view of modern history. At times his broad generalizations bothered me, but for the most part I felt it was really worthwhile particularly when taken in context of the time it was written. Clearly Dimont was very forward thinking for his time and more open than most of his peers. "

" A history of jew is basically a history of "God" and civilasation. 'God' in here meaning not as 'a real' but as 'concept'. In the 21th century the 'God' is what the book has told you about. "
