"I can't say enough about this series of books. If you are a lover of animals, you will love them all. The fact that the books are true stories, written by an actual country vet , makes them all the more touching, hilarious, and heartbreaking. I loved every one!"

Quotes

  • “Reader Christopher Timothy portrayed the semi-fictional Yorkshire veterinarian James Herriot in the wonderful BBC television series "All Creatures Great and Small" and has recorded versions of Herriot's work in such productions as the abridged Every Living Thing, (Audio Renaissance, 1993). He's just as good a reader as he is an actor. His cultured British voice twinkles with humor and shades into heartwarming emotion as appropriate. The stories of the animal doctor's vicissitudes with a variety of animals are kind and affecting; Timothy makes the characters real and well individuated. With his crystal articulation, he is marvelous, and so is the music from the television series.

About James Herriot

James Herriot (1916-1995) was the bestselling author of memoirs, including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing. At age twenty-three, he qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. Though he dreamed for years of writing a book, his veterinary work and his family kept him busy, and he did not start writing until the age of fifty. In 1979, he was awarded the title Order of the British Empire (OBE). His veterinary practice in Yorkshire, England, is now tended by his son, Jim Wight.
