Publisher Description

Now a major motion picture

Stephen King’s terrifying, classic #1 New York Times bestseller, “a landmark in American literature” (Chicago Sun-Times)—about seven adults who return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they had first stumbled on as teenagers…an evil without a name: It.

Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real.

They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made twenty-eight years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derry’s sewers.

Readers of Stephen King know that Derry, Maine, is a place with a deep, dark hold on the author. It reappears in many of his books, including Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, and 11/22/63. But it all starts with It.

“Stephen King’s most mature work” (St. Petersburg Times), “It will overwhelm you… to be read in a well-lit room only” (Los Angeles Times).

"I had a bad opinion of Steven King. The first book of his I ever read was Gerald's Game, and I didn't like it. I was 14 and it was about a woman just laying there, reflecting on her past abuse and trauma while trapped in the most boring BDMS scene ever gone wrong. IT is an entirely different creature, absolutely magical by comparison. At least, as magical as horror can be. Not only is the story enthralling, but the writing is clever, artful, and at times beautiful. King inspires empathy and powerful visuals. All of the characters are deeply distinct and relateable, even the asshole antagonists. The flow is easy to follow and keeps you engaged. IT is a masterpiece. Steven Weber delivers a wonderful performance. For almost 45 hours he reads with emotion, setting the mood with tone and volume. Each character has a voice, Richie has several, all played out naturally and consistently. He tells the story as if it was really his story. He is Stuttering Bill and Bev the Bitch. He's even poor Patty Uris softly pleading through the bathroom door. He is them, and this is what (most of them) lived through. Bravo, Steven and Stephen. You've earned a fan. "

Quotes

  • “[King’s] best novel since Firestarter.”

    — People
  • “It will overwhelm you…Characters so real you feel you are reading about yourself…scenes to be read in a well-lit room only!”

    — Los Angeles Times
  • “For a book with such a tiny title, Stephen King’s It is one huge undertaking. It’s a good thing actor Steven Weber is on board to perform it, all forty-five hours of it. Weber is skilled at wringing out all the emotion, evil, and mystery in King’s book.”

    — AudioFile
  • “A great book…a landmark in literature.”

    — Chicago Sun-Times
  • “A sprawling scare-fest.”

    — Philadelphia Inquirer
  • “King’s most mature work.”

    — St. Petersburg Times
  • “The amazingly prolific King returns to pure horror, pitting good against evil as in The Stand and The Shining…the requisite thrills are in abundance, and King’s depiction of youngsters is extraordinarily accurate and sympathetic…King is a born storyteller, and It will undoubtedly be in high demand among his fans.”

    — Library Journal
  • “It is a great story full of memorable events, places, and characters…what I like most about It, and what separates the book from much of the rest of King’s oeuvre, is its thoughtful exploration of that amorphous crossing of the bar from youth to maturity…It is a horrific page turner with deeper literary ambitions that it mostly fulfills.”

" Definitely one of the scarier Stephen King books I've read - though I've finished it, I'm more terrified of clowns now than whilst reading it. The ending is rather well done for King despite what people have to say. It is long but King's signature writing style makes it go by quickly and keeps you turning the pages. The only problem I have with the book is the lack of connection that I felt with the characters. Though their histories are very well developed, as well their personalities, I just felt this disconnect throughout the entire book. I think it may be from the way the reader is presented with two slices of time, one from the characters' childhood and one from their adulthood while little is given about the time in between. "

" Overall, this book was probably worth reading. At almost 1100 pages, that's saying quite a lot. However, a length between 300 and 600 pages would have really improved the overall experience. The length made it impossible to really maintain suspense simply due to the amount of time required to get through it. Also, it felt Bill Denbrough was a clear stand-in for Stephen King, so the relentless singing of Bill's praises got a little old. On the positive side, the ending was pretty good, and did justice to the long, slow buildup, which is rare for books that attempt to be epic. "

" This is my favorite book by Stephen King. I read it the summer after sixth grade, and I identified very much with the characters. It was probably the first *big book* that I read, and I remember reading it voraciously, being scared, and feeling weird at the end. The parts when the characters were adults were above my head, but the rest was very compelling. "

  • Overall Performance: 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5

" My favorite King novel. It's amusing that King mentions in his book On Writing that a writer must be brief and not include extraneous description, while he has been notorious for doing exactly that and this is no exception. IT has to be looked at not as a single story (which, if it is, the story is remarkably shorter than this thick volume appears) but as a description of a time period - the late 50's - in a small town on the east coast where terrible things are happening. It's not just about a monster, it's about human nature. Like with a lot of King's best works, the heroes are children - and this is what makes it so scary, because they are the ones we least want to see these things happening to. If you grew up reading Goosebumps or Animorphs or any of those other series with good clean western kids defying the odds to save the day... this book will have quite the effect on you. "

" This was so close to being another amazing book by King, but it got really weird and wildly inappropriate at the end and just really messed up my ability to enjoy the characters I had learned so much about. This must be a prime example of one of King's famous bad endings. I don't regret listening to the audiobook, but will probably not re-read it. Steven Weber's narration was outstanding, one of the best performances I've heard lately. "
