Interestingly, the story was written in the mid-50s but is set in the mid-70s although the tone seems more 50s to me. There are probably some "futuristic" aspects and now I wish I'd paid more attention to those details. Jack Finney was the author of the much loved and critically acclaimed novel Time and Again and its sequel, From Time to Time. He was best known for his thrillers and science fiction, and a number of his books were made into movies. He died in 1995.

He was an author and former Washington Post reporter who covered the military from the perspective of soldiers crawling in the mud and from the offices of decision-makers in Washington, and who played a notable role in the Pentagon Papers case.
