On a snowy night, Cara and her grandmother are pursued into St. Christopher's church by an unknown man. Clutching her grandmother's mysterious amulet, and following the old woman's instructions, Cara escapes their pursuer and falls into Luster, the world of the unicorns. Attacked by a monstrous little creature called a delver, Cara is rescued by a shambling, manlike beast known only as the Dimblethum.

Soon Cara has also met a rebellious young unicorn named Lightfoot, and a ridiculous little creature called the Squijum. With their help, Cara embarks on a journey across Luster to deliver a message from her grandmother to the queen of the unicorns. But to survive the trip, Cara must come face to face with her greatest hope, and her greatest fear. Download and start listening now!

" I remember this absolutely blowing me away when I was much younger, and it's definitely for a young age group. Still, it's a good book, and I still keep a copy of it around. I'm glad the next three books in the series are finally out, though I can't believe the author actually took 15 years to write them. I'm much older now, man! My suspension of disbelief has changed quite a bit in 15 years! "

" Not my favorite Coville book, but a good solid story. My only complaint is that the other installments took too long to come out, making it hard to be excited about reading them! "

" I can't tell you how much I loved this book as a kid (around 10 years old) and how well it has stood the test of time (now 26.) It has so many creative details and language that is fluid and easy-to-digest but still beautiful. It has some rather dark tones, which get darker as the series progresses. I wish more kids grew up loving this book the way I did. "

" It lost a star because there are a lot of stories that were never started/finished. He left some loose ends maybe in hopes to create more. Well, it took him almost 20 YEARS to finish 4 books, I don't want any more loose ends. I want it over. It's not over. "

" This was so disappointing. After all this time, surely Coville could have written a better book? There were too many hurried plotlines, a few self/reader insertions, and a lot of overly-obvious plot points. "

" This was an excellent end to a wonderful series. I love that he left so many things open for possible other books centered around Luster, but still wrapped up all the characters & story lines within the unicorn chronicles. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 April | 9/26/2010

" Very nice but somewhat predictable finish for the series. There are numerous ways that this story (or another story in the Unicorn Chronicles could) continue. I hope to see more Unicorn Chronicle books from Bruce Coville. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Alyssa | 9/11/2010

" Just as good as the last 3 books in the series. Definitely recommend them all (start at the beginning). Adventure and fantasy, fun characters and interesting plot lines. Don't be fooled by the "children's book" classification. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Tiffiny | 9/11/2010

" We listened to this last (I think) in the Unicorn Chronicles series. Great story, lots of action and unexpected twists. Great ending too! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Lisa | 8/31/2010

" still as interesting and involved as the other's in the series. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sarah | 8/21/2010

" I really liked this series. It was a fun, quick read. And this 4th book is very good. However, I wish he had extended the ending a little by adding a couple more chapters. It seems like he rushed the ending. It's still good, but I wanted more. "
