Publisher Description

In this endearing story, Jim Averbeck-regional advisor for the San Francisco Bay Area Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators-captures the sweetness of a boisterous child settling down for a night of sleep. A lyrical bedtime gem with a colorful twist, In a Blue Room highlights the simple wonders of a trusting child, a loving mother, and a starry sky. Her room still awash with toys, pajama-clad Alice leaps for her bed like a tiny paratrooper. Although it's past her bedtime, the little girl is wide awake and claims she can only sleep in a blue room.

"The story begins, "In a blue room, Alice bounces, wide-awake past bedtime," and I am intrigued because the room is clearly not blue. Alice's mother brings her things that Alice rejects because they are not blue: lilacs and lilywhites that "give off a gentle scent," orange tea cooling in a brown cup, "lullaby bells to sing [her:] to sleep. When Alice asks for the moon, Mama whispers, "Here it comes," and the magic begins. Lovely read-a-loud. Lovely illustrations. A necessary bedtime book in a market of too many bedtime stories."

" This was an adorable story about a child getting ready for bed, and fussing that things aren't her favorite color: blue. "In a blue room" is repeated, which seems strange at first, because the room is yellow. However, with the transformative power of the light going off and the moon coming out , our little heroine has her wish. Everything is blue. And then she is able to fall asleep. Kids will wonder why it's called the Blue room, too, and that will provoke interest. "
