" Loved it. One of my all time favourites. One of his longer ones, perhaps, but absorbing, very well written, just a great story. At the risk of continuing a theme, the film's a turkey and nothing like the book. So stick with the original text instead. Plenty worse ways to spend an evening or two, especially if the weather's poor, the TV's poor or you've upset the better half... "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Ryan | 2/21/2013

" I became obsessed with Maclean when I was ten, and read about seven of his books one summer while up at a lake house my parents rented up in Vermont, near Middlebury. I would read Maclean while in a rowboat, anchored out in the middle of the lake, sitting in an innertube. The perfect place to read. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Alicia | 2/12/2013

" I tried to like this, but it's far too contrived. The first half is full of interesting submarine facts, but the plot quickly falls apart. "

" Well worth a one-time read. The usual fare from Alistair Maclean, with the dawn of nuclear submarines being the backdrop. Vivid characterisations like that of the Commander and the doctor.. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Piotr | 12/2/2011

" My favourite MaLean's book. This is the way action novels should be written: taut, interesting, and loaded with realistic plot twists, but without any unnecessary violence, sex etc. This book certainly keeps the reader on their toes. "

" Its just dammn good old Maclean at his best. M.I.6, counter espionage it all in here with Dr.Carpenter the younger brother of Major Halliwell, hell of a classical antique thriller. Good management skill show by Comd.James D. Swanson. "

(having read it) Wow, really pacy and most excellent. By the end I still really didn't know what had been going on! But the parts under the ice were enthralling. "
