Dream house…or bad dream?

When the Kings move from LA to a secluded small town, fifteen-year-old Xander is beyond disappointed. He and his friends loved to create amateur films, but the tiny town of Pinedale is the last place a movie buff and future filmmaker wants to land. He, David, and Toria are, however, captivated by the many rooms in the old Victorian fixer-upper they moved into—as well as by the heavy woods that surround it.

They soon discover there’s something odd about the house. Sounds come from the wrong direction. Prints of giant, bare feet appear in the dust. And when David tries to hide in the linen closet, he winds up in locker one-nineteen at his new school.

Then the really weird stuff kicks in. They find a hidden hallway with portals leading to far-off places—in long-ago times. Xander is starting to wonder if this kind of travel is a teen’s dream come true…or his worst nightmare.

" A young adult book, for maybe 10-15 years old. Some violence no sex/romance. It was a treat i was intrigued in the mystery of this house they moved into, hidden in the woods. It's secrets thrilling and sometimes scary. I can see this becoming a very popular series. "

" I am not sure what I thought this book would be, but it turned out a little scary. I am not someone who really likes scary, I tend to imagine the scary things from a book or movie happening to me in real life so I usually stay clear. It got scary towards the end and I was already engrossed in the story, which was really good. So now I have to read all six books...darn. I mean yay for finding a good series, darn for being scared....eek! "

" ngeri-ngeri gimanaaa gitu, trus bacanya pas lagi "sial", kunci ketinggalan di kasur, jadi pas pulang kerja ga bisa masuk rumah. mana ujan deres, mana rumah gw ga ada tempat buat neduh yang enak. dan gw harus nunggu 3 jam sampe tante gw pulang. beneran serem bukunya. "

" Interesting beginning to a story of a house where rooms are not what they seem. Creepy without being horrific. Good horror novel for YA. "

" I downloaded this onto my nook since it was offered as one of B&N's Friday freebies. Unfortunately, it didn't really impress me. The writing is stilted and the characters are thin. Also, it took far too long to decide what kind of book it wanted to be, and then ended predictably with a cliffhanger. Which I see from looking at the sequels is not actually resolved in the second book, either. The whole book felt like buildup to the presumed sequels. "

" I can't believe I missed this series. I should have had these books in my classroom library years ago. I am now on a mission to find these books. I really enjoyed House of Dark Shadows. I listened to the audio version, which was very well read. The adventure and mystery worked nicely together. "

" I really was liking this book until I started listening to Peter and the Shadow Thieves and then I was reminded what a really well written book is like. The concept of this book is entertaining though and I would be curious to know how the series progresses, but I probably won't read more of these. "

" Ok. I thought the concept and plot of this hook was really cool, but it was very predictable; I wanted more information on the history of the house. I hope in the 2nd book things will pick up because I have a problem with books that have a lot of unuseful filler:-( Hope it gets better!!! "

" A little slow and not much happened BUT I'm interested in the mystery of the house. What is its purpose? Where do the doors lead? How did it come to be? It's also nice to read a book where the family members actually love each other and get along. What a novel concept. "
