" I read this book a few years ago, and thought Charlotte spent too much time telling others how to behave. I enjoyed it more the second time around. "

" Mystery set in England in the late 1800's. Charlotte Pitt helps her husband Thomas solve the suspicious fires in two high society homes that kill 2 important people. Accidents or murder?? I love plucky ladies!! "

" This was one of the better ones...I like Charlotte as she gets older and more concerned about the conditions of the poor in London. "

" I keep reading this series, even though it isn't stellar. I like the main characters though. This one was fairly complex and detailed, and a bit bogged down because of it. The the denoument was about 2 pages long. The end. A bit disappointing. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Jen | 7/16/2008

" Very much the Victorian mystery. I felt that a major part of the book was repetition but the ending was a surprise. Not who I expected at all. "

" Another Thomas Pitt mystery. Historical fiction with an enthralling mystery. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Laura | 6/2/2008

" A good book but I thought the ending happened very fast and left a few loose ends. As always, there is further character development which for me is one of the reasons that I enjoy this series. The mysteries themselves are not the main focus rather the characters are. "
